Preemies

According to the March of Dimes, half a million babies are born prematurely each year (approximately 10 percent of all pregnancies). Premature infants have many special needs that make their care different from that of full-term infants. Preemies 4 both pregnancies

I seem to not be able to keep my babies in for the whole pregnancy! My son Collin was born at 33 weeks (5lbs 7oz) and had gastroschesis ( when the stomach wall does not close around the organs while in utero.) He stayed in the NICU for 28 days after 2 very successful surgeries. Then 6 years later my daughter Aliyah came early at 31 weeks-due to preeclampsia at 3lbs 1 1/4 oz. She came home from the NICU after 29 days. My son is now 6 1/2 years old and has no problems with his intestines. My daughter is now 10 weeks old and weighs 7lbs 8oz. I just wanted to introduce myself and see if there was anyone else to chat with about preemies.

This board is kind of slow...but you will eventually hear from a bunch! I kinda know where you are coming from...my first daughter was born at 36 weeks and my second daughter was born at 33 weeks. Originally they thought she wasn't quite that early, but my doctor had stuff all screwed up! Anyhow... they have determined that for some reason my placenta grows thicker towards the end of pregnancy and the baby stops getting nutrients and kicks itself into labor. That keeps getting sooner in pregnancy based on the two that I have. So we are done! I'm not willing to risk a third for that reason. My husband and I are happy and blessed with the two girls we have and for us we really didn't want to do the whole NICU thing again! How is your daughter doing? Any complications?

My daughter is doing really well! She is almost 9 lbs and she'll be 3 months old on the 5th of August. Thank you for responding! I was starting to think that I'm the only one out there with 2 preemies. I just thank God every day that everything has turned out okay so far with both of them. I am not willing to try for a third because I have been blessed with overall healthy children. They just like to make an early appearance!! I too am not wanting to go through the whole NICU experience again although I have to give credit to the angels that work there ( I don't know how they do it everyday!!)

Hi there congrats on both your babies and glad to hear they are doing great now....this board is kinda slow but we all usually pop in now and again!! My son Keegan was born at 24 weeks due to placenta abrubtion and spent 135 days in the NICU. He just turned two on August 30th. He weighed 1 pound 12 ounces when he was born and now we're up to almost 19 pounds and 31 inches long. He has had alot of health problems the past two years including 15 surgeries. He also has Hirschsprung's disease which adds on to the fact that it's hard for him to put on weight!! These past three months are the first time ever that we haven't even had to make an ER trip!! Woo hoo He gets four therapies a week including physical, occupational, developmental, and speech!!! He's got alot of catching up to do but his smile makes everything in the world just right!! Good luck with everything!

Just wanted to update: Aliyah is almost 7 months old now and weighs 15 1/2 lbs! She's 26 1/4 in long!!! She has caught up so fast that her pediatrician is taking her off of the extra calorie formula and putting her on regular similac. She is also eating foods! (green beans are not very popular) I just can't believe how well she is doing!!!! Congratulations on the twins!!! Good luck! I could not imaging having two newborns at once!!!!

Holy smoke!  That's my son Brendon's birthday, too, and he also had an abruption.  But his was hidden and we didn't know anything was wrong until I was in labor, and he was a 37 1/2 weeker, so not even a preemie.  But he was 4 lbs 14 oz due to IUGR, and now they think he has ASD (Autism Spectrum).  But I can't help but wonder if it's delays from the IUGR.

Thank God he's healthy, though - I couldn't imagine all those surgeries.  I'm glad he's doing better now.

    Re: Preemies 4 both pregnancies

33 weeks and 28 weeks seems to be a popular preemie age from what I have learned. I went into labor at 28 weeks and they stopped it after a week in the hospital. I ended up having my daughter at 33 weeks. She was 4lb 2oz and 18in. She spent 15 days in the NICU. She is now 11 weeks old and around 8-9 lbs. She is actually sick right now she has bronculitus. Does anyone have any experience with that? please share if you do.

I had uterus ruptured during labor 12 years ago. It's like miracle to get pregnant again after long years! However I had complication due to bad condition of uterus - my baby was born @ 26 weeks, weighted 2lbs 2oz. She suffered from Intraventricular hemorrhage in brain and developed hydrocephalus at early stage of life... She is now 8 months (corrected age 5 months). Thanks God she can rolls over in bed and cooing in her own language most time...

Hi I am Rhiana and I had my daughter at 31 weeks on October 18 2007. She was due December 14, 2007. She was 3.5lbs and 16 inches long. She was in the NICU for a month. She had some seriously scarey things happen in the hospital. She had a spinal tap and a pic line put in. I was terribly frightened. Now she is 24lbs and growing very fast. The doctors told us she was going to have downs syndrome and be a dwarf. boy were they wrong. She is perfectly healthy except for a minor kidney issue. Your baby will be great! Enjoy them while they are little. They grow fast!

Hi im new... my daughter is a preemie, i had her when i was 33 weeks she was 4 lbs 10 oz and she was perfectly healthy, thank God. She did have jaundice (at birth), colic, and acid reflux. The jaundice and acid reflux has went away since, but the colic drives me crazy sometimes! my poor baby, it's weird cuz the colic hits her all at once. She is now about to be 6 months.
