    Will it ever stop??

My baby girl is 6 weeks old. The doctors tell me she suffers from colic. She screams at all times of the day, for 20 min to hours and hours. I am bottle feeding and have already tried changing her formula to Neutramagin. I have tried rocking, warm baths, low lighting, music, bouncy seats, white noise and music. I need some advice. Can anyone help???

I have to say, I do agree with the attempt at breast feeding, if you didn't already. You hardly ever hear of a bf baby that has colic. But more important....are you stressed? Are you relaxed enough? Babies sense this. If you're tense when around the baby, the baby will be tense and be more likely to scream and cry. Walk away for a bit (with proper babysitting tended to, of course). And take a break! I found it helped when we had a few bumpy days. Good Luck!

my first (breastfed) baby had colic... but I did not know then that it was caused by the large animal proteins found in dairy.  As soon as I stopped eating dairy, his colic was gone!  it was a miracle.  Sooooo many babies have issues with this but if you are breast feeding then you can just cut the offensive food out of your diet.

    Re: Will it ever stop??

My first child had colic and I breastfed her. Had to supplement with formula at 4 weeks because of low supply probably due to the stress of her constant crying. My 2nd child also now has colic. I exclusively breast feed him. I've also tried cutting out dairy completely and am on a totally bland diet but nothing is working. Some babies just get colic, breastfed or not. I was not stressed before he got the colic symptoms. In fact I was very happy thinking I had a non colicky baby for his first 2 weeks of life, and then everything went down hill when his crying and reflux started. I don't believe a parent can give a child colic or that breastfeeding or formula feeding are the answer. It is just something that some babies go thru and then all of a sudden it is over and you have your happy child back. My first child is now 2 1/2 and the sweetest, happiest, most outgoing child you will meet. So I know it does not mean there is anything wrong with your baby. Just know you will get thru this. I am going to try a chiropractor with my 2nd child tomorrow and see if that helps. He is 6 weeks today which is usually the worst week for colic symptoms. I hope it works. We've already tried several medications for reflux which have helped a LITTLE but the crying is still very frustrating. I also give him mylicon when he acts like it is gas that is bothering him and SOMETIMES it helps. It will get better!!

Interesting.  Would you be interested in taking probiotics to see if that helps?  You are the first person that I have come across where changing the diet did not help.  I am intrigued.  Can you tell me what kind of things you are eating now?

I believe that colic comes from an immature digestive system and the baby reacting to things that we are eating now that may not be intended for our bodies.  :)  or atleast for a babies to have to digest.

    Re: Will it ever stop??

I actually bought some probiotics to try today. I've been eating baked chicken, rice, potatoes, cooked green beans, cooked carrots, oatmeal, bread and not much else. I took Jonah to the chiropractor today so hopefully the treatment will help. They also suggested gripe water, which I will try and me drinking chamamile tea. I hope between all that something works to help him out!!!

I used gripe water with my second son... it worked pretty well.  Does he have any skin issues?  Is it always at the same time everyday?  What do you drink?  50 questions...  Big Smile

also do you have an exercise ball?  We used a ball and a sling with my youngest two.  Put them in the sling and bounced.....and bounced.... lol  I was able to browse the internet while do it though.  :D  I make slings if you want to try one.  You can click on my profile to get a link to my site.

Yes, he has a very bad case of baby acne. It looks more like a rash to me, but Dr. says acne. His crying is at all times of the day. Worse when he is tired and can't get to sleep. He does sleep at night except for feedings pretty well between 9pm and 7am. I drink mostly water. Occasional caffiene free soda or coffee. I've tried the moby wrap with him many times and he fusses like crazy until I take him out. He doesn't like it. Can't blame him, it is summer and it gets hot. I've tried different positions in it too, but none seem to work for him. I make sure he is fed and calm before putting him in, but within minutes of putting him in it he is screaming. I have an excercise ball and we've tried it but it doesn't work any better than just walking and jiggling him. thanks!

I'm reading "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp.  It discusses colic specifically and how to soothe/calm a crying infant.  I'm still trying to assess what I think about it all, but it might be helpful for you given your current situation.

It's a really interesting read and I'm implementing some of what he suggests with my own (4 week old).

I'm so sorry you are feeling the extra stress from mothering, I hope this time frame passes quickly for you.

my second was like this too... with the acne.  He was most bothered by meat... when I ate meat.  Weird to me since I thought it was the dairy.  Meat and juice.  Weird kid.  lol  Could be something else.  But almost all bf babies grow out of it at 6 months.  That is the upside.

    Re: Will it ever stop??

I know there is an end, since my first child also had colic. She was a high needs baby even after the terrible crying stopped. I guess when you are living thru it, you will try anything to help your child feel better. Plus, when he starts napping better, I'll get more rest and feel better too. Can't wait!!! I've taken him off the zantac and maalox we had him on and I'm trying the gripe water only. He's not really any better but definitely not worse yet. So I feel better he's not getting unneccessary medication at the moment. Thanks for all the input everyone!

    Re: Will it ever stop??

I know how difficult it can be. My baby girl has colic most evenings between 5pm and 9pm. I am solely breastfeeding her and she still get's colic. I've read that colic can be caused by so many things that it's difficult to pinpoint. I agree with PP, it's so difficult to know what is the ultimate cause. I've read that you shoudn't eat grapes or citrus fruits whilst bf as this can cause colic. I've also read that dummies can cause colic, once you start to do research, pretty much anything can cause it!! I'm currently using Infacol to try and ease her pains, which can be used from birth. I tend to rock, put her on her play mat, place her on her tummy and rub her back and lastly move her legs in a bicycle motion - the last seems to work the best!! It doesn't necessarily stop the colic, but it does keep her entertained for a couple of minutes and we then go round in circles for the 4 hours that she cries with the above. For the last 30 minutes i place her in a warm bath and that seems to settle her. I think that by having a little routine helps me cope with her crying as it's intermittent as opposed to constant crying. I hope this is useful and good luck. Remember, it doesn't last forever.

    Re: Will it ever stop??

For breastfed babies (for the PP), crying before bedtime is VERY common.  Its a cluster-feeding time.  They just cry and fuss unless you nurse them constantly, one boob after the other, back to back.  All three of my babies did this nightly until they were about 8 wks old.  They are tanking up and building your supply.  The only way your boob knows to make more is if they ask for it, I guess!

For sarasmom (I think) with colic:  Have you tried chiro therapy for your babies?  I know that sounds really weird, but many chiros are newly trained in the area of infant massage and accupressure therapy.  Its not like crack-your-back therapy.  Its specialized massage.  My 2nd baby had MSPI and was sensitive to tomatoes and a couple of other things.  He's still allergic to milk, though.  But, after taking all of those things out of his diet, he was still fussy!  So, I had someone recommend infant chiro care.  I took him in the first day (he was 4 mos old) and he had severe tightness in his neck.  She actually swapped places with me and showed me how to feel it.  I couldn't believe how tight it was.  :-(  He just wailed when she massaged it.  And it was very gentle massage.  He was so upset the first day that she told me to hold him with his tummy against my chest.  He was wailing and arching his back in, what looked like agony.  She pulled off his diaper and put pressure on some pressure points on his backside.  He stopped crying and just fell asleep.  Honestly, this was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen in my life.  She told me that some babies will sleep for hours after that kind of adjustment and accupressure.  Mine didn't, but his mood improved dramatically over the course of a few days.  I wish I had tried it sooner.  After the knots were released, also, he started rolling over, smiling, and just being a normal baby more often.

My chiro asked a few questions about his birth, too.  One very specific question she asked was whether or not he came out "correctly."  I couldn't really answer that, because I didn't know.  She then asked me if I had "back labor."  I told her I most definitely did...that it seems to run in my family.  She had me ask my OB how baby presented at birth, and he presented OP...which is face up (when they are supposed to be face down).  The chiro explained that when they are face up like that, OBs often have to twist them by their head or they, somehow, turn awkwardly in delivery that can cause some damage to the cervical spine.  Not always permanent damage, but like you've got a "crick" in your neck that you can't get rid of.

So that's a novel about my experience with some parts of his colic.  He also had an upper GI for reflux and fears of pyloric stenosis.

There is something called NAET treatments, too.  They aren't performed everywhere and I don't know much about them.  I have a friend who swears by it.  Its a natural treatment for allergies and sensitivities.  You might google it.  Her husband is moderately allergic to milk and her firstborn just suffered from severe colic.  His stools were violent and full of blood and mucous all the time.  He had the worst eczema.  She cut out all milk and went on the TED diet (which is something else you could try, if you haven't already), but something was still bothering him.  She sought NAET treatments and testing.  They found he was allergic (or highly sensitive) to red dye 40 (or something like that), brown sugar, milk, tomatoes, and something else I can't remember.  He did 6 wks of NAET treatments and she can now eat a little dairy everyday without any reactions.  And his colic & eczema went away as well.

If any of you think you might have a refluxer on your hands, you should try an infant reflux wedge.  http://www.pedicraft.com makes them and Tucker Slings are awesome.  You can sometiems find them used on craigslist or on EBay.  I just sold one on CL, because I was done with it.  It helps, too.
