Tricks for Getting Him to Feed for 20 Minutes

My new little guy will only nurse for 7 minutes in a row.  Like clockwork, he simply refuses after 7 minutes.  He's two and a half weeks old and still not regaining the weight he lost, so my doctor says to do what it takes to feed him for 20 minutes each feeding.  Help!  How do I get him to relatch?  (We are feeding on demand during the day, usually every 2 - 3 hours, but never more than 3 hours, and feeding every 3 - 4 hours at night - 3 if he wakes on his own and 4 if I have to wake him.)

Is your supply still really full?  I'd guess that he doesn't want to eat anymore because you have a major let down and he just isn't hungry anymore?  Raven never really ate for long periods of time and still doesn't.  She's usually under 10minutes, maybe 15 after a long stretch of sleep at night.

If you think he is full, he is fine.  Can you see him actively nursing and swallowing during those 7 minutes?  Do you burp and switch sides?

my first was a speed nurser... like 5 minutes!  my second, mr. fatty, would nurse for 40 minutes.  My third is in between.  Some are just more efficent.

My little one used to be the same(she is now 3 months old) when she was little. what i used to do was feed her, then burp her, then change her nappy, then try feed her again. if your little one is still struggling with the weight gain try feeding her every 2 hours. my baby had difficulties with slow weight gain and we do 2 hourly feedings. it has helped a lot. hth

Does he fall asleep after 7 minutes? If so, try uncovering his legs, stroking his cheek, lie him flat to wake him a bit. I also have to force feed after 3 hours. It's easier to feed on demand with the bottle, but that''s more work for you.....pumping and feeding.

my ped. said to pump a lil bit of milk and either feed by using the syringe dropper or just bits at a time from an open cup.........you simply cant force a baby to latch on but this should work.....if you dont have a pump you can try breastfeeding.com for info on how to manually extract milk....... goodluck hopefully your lil one gains what he needs........
