If you are bfeeding then your milk has all the baby needs but I dont know about bottle feeding. I dont give my babys water when they are little but 18months that kinda sound alittle funny by then they are old enough I think to drink water.

I give my children water in the bottle at bedtime once they cut teeth. I do not want them to rot their teeth from formula.

Babies dont need water, as breastmilk and formula both contain water but as they get older around 9months or a year and are using a sippy cup I dont see why you couldnt put water in it opposed to juice or milk.

I was told that if I am going to give the baby water that it MUST be sterilized. I give My little one about 1oz of water when she is constipated. This can help to relieve the discomfort for her she is 1 month old. The Dr. also told me to be very careful as to how ofter you give them water as it can deplete their vitamins and minerals that they get from either formula or breast milk. I think it is up to the parent them selves. You know what is best for your baby.

    Re: giving newborns water

I WAS TOLD THAT U SHOULD NOT GIVE BABIES YOUNGER THAN 6 MONTHS WATER BECAUSE THEY CAN DIE FROM WATER INTOXICATION......Hold off on giving your baby water until he's about 6 months old, and limit it to about an ounce or two at a time — ideally after meals. You don't want your baby to feel so full that he refuses to nurse or take his bottle. If your baby seems interested in taking occasional sips of water before 6 months of age, it's not going to hurt him. In fact, a little bit of water can help keep your baby hydrated in hot weather. But talk to his doctor if you're offering it before 6 months. Giving a baby younger than 6 months old too much water can interfere with his body's ability to absorb the nutrients in breast milk or formula. In rare cases, babies who drink too much water can develop a condition known as "water intoxication," which can cause seizures and even coma. "Babies don't really need water, or any liquid other than breast milk or formula, until after their first birthday," says Rachel Brandeis, a registered dietitian in Atlanta. After age 1, water and milk are Brandeis's baby beverages of choice. "You want to be sure juices don't displace milk in a baby's diet," she says. Once your baby celebrates his first birthday, you can let him drink as much water as he wants.

I printed out this last post and the doc said that if you give your child toooo much water then yes, there is a problem... the main thing is they are worried that the water will fill the baby with water not he needed food from formula or breast milk, not the vitemens or minierals or Fat, she said water is ok in very very small amounts, almost like a filler, once they finish the formula and may look to want more, an ounce is not a bad thing, but check with your doc first!

Hi all - I am lurking from the June board and we had this discussion a couple weeks ago.  You shouldn't give babies water until at least 6 months because their kidneys can't process the water the right way and it can lead to deathly seizures.  Just my two cents!  :)
