  Wow, it's not very busy here! Reply Contact That's too bad, I was excited when I saw this forum! I started signing with my daughter when she was about 6 months old and I am SO glad that I did. I'm not even as hard core about it as a lot of other parents, but it still helps so much with our communication. She's 16 months old now and between her signs and her 25-30 spoken words that she has we get to avoid a lot of frustration! I'm due this week with our second and I'm totally going to start signing with him/her right away!

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just curious :) I started doing the sign for 'milk' and the sign for 'fan' with Roddick but I don't know if I should use more at once or if it's completely pointless to even do it right now.

Reply Contact I think as long as your baby is responsive to you its safe to say they are getting "something" from you signing to them.  I think once we've established our nursing relationship this is going to be my next project for baby.... if he ever decides to leave my body LOL.  I too was disappointed to see how dead this board was!  I was hoping for much, much more!  but I'm glad you two have found it as well!

We started with just a few.  We started with "milk" "more"  and "all done."  Then we added "please" and "thank you."  After Callie got the first few then we started adding a sign every couple of weeks.

You can do as many as you want though. I mean, with spoken language you don't only speak 5 words to your baby until they start saying them back right? I just kept introducing signs as I learned them and especially once she started signing back (around 10-11 months).

LOL And I definitely think that no matter how many signs you do with your baby, it's all good! Every sign that they can do helps them to communicate better. And I've found that it's helped Mackenzie to talk more too because I can interpret what she's trying to say. For example she says "Da" for bath. If it wasn't for the fact that she signs it at the same time I would have never known that was what she was saying. But she is very specific in her use for it so it's not just babbling, she's actually communicating and I understand her because of her signing! And then I'm able to reinforce how to say the correct word too.

Any suggestions would be great.   I used the book by Sara Bingham. I think it's called Baby Signing. I can't remember the exact title but that's the name of the author. I got it out of the library. It was very helpful and had a whole dictionary of signs in the back.

Reply Contact We started watching the baby enstines baby's first signs with our 4 month old and so far he doesn't seem to get it but he is still really young. My friend taught her 18 month old signs and it is so cute to see this little girl "tell" her mom whether she wants water, juice, or milk etc.

Reply Contact  I just started taking a baby sign language class today at my ASYMCA (we're military) and it was fun :)  The person that is teaching says that she started doing some signs with her son at 7mo and he picked up on them within a couple weeks but didn't sign back to her until 12mo.  But he understood well before he signed them himself so I'm feeling very confident about it :)  We're working on the sign for 'more' right now and then I'll be learning a new one each week (as I get more confident with the older ones) and I'll add the newer ones to my everyday use with her.  This week though I'm focusing on 'more' and using it as much as possible.  Practice practice practice!
