I 100% agree. Its a growing trend. Birth, especially with today's modern practices, can be very traumatic on the spine of a newborn. And, without treatment, sometimes it doesn't resolve itself. Colic isn't always gastrointestinal. It is a specific response to something that is bothering them. I took my little guy for infant chiropractic treatments (a general family chiropractor with infant specialization was what we chose) and the adjustments are very gentle...almost like infant massage. Brayden (my baby) had horrible sleep problems. He had a hard time turning his head one way or the other to get comfortable. So...I decided to try this! The chiro, right of the bat, noticed that he had tremendous tightness in his neck. I hadn't even told her his problems before her evaluation. She said she preferred it that way, because many moms were very skeptical of the idea of chiro care for a baby. After noticing the tightness, she spout his symptoms one after the other..."Is he having trouble turning his head? Is he having trouble sleeping? Does he have trouble lifting his head when on his tummy?" Yes, to all of the above. What was even MORE amazing was that she nailed the problems in the delivery, as well. "He was born occiput posterior, wasn't he?" Etc. Right on.
The first adjustment was kind of painful for him, though her touch was ultra-delicate. She showed me exactly the pressure and massage she was using. His tightness was so profound, though, that it was painful and would take several appointments to get it released. After the massage of the neck, he was bawling, so she used instant accupressure points on his buttocks to calm him down. As soon as she pressured those points, he fell asleep on my shoulder...and slept for about 4 hrs. Amazing job. His overnight sleeping was really not improved, unfortunately, and we still (at 2.5 yrs old) deal with that issue, but his mobility immediately improved. And his daytime mood was improved 100%.
I completely recommend an infant chiro evaluation soon after birth, when it is best to treat any misalignment, subluxations or muscle spasm/tightening that may have occurred during the birth. Great idea!
