Making Baby Food

Homemade baby food undergoes less processing and is therefore more nutritious, better-tasting, and less expensive than store-bought, jarred foods. Share information, recipes, and tips with other parents on this board who are committed to or interested in making their baby’s food.

    Freezing food

Who knows what fruits and veggies DO NOT freeze well?

I've come across a few so far, banana, avocado, and yellow squash. Most web-sites about making baby food say that these do freeze fairly well, but that hasn't been my experience. Does anyone have any to add?

I have frozen squash and had no trouble with it. Apparently eggplant is also on that list, which kinda stinks because you could really make a lot at once with that kind of veggie. So far, I have only experimented with carrots, green beans, peas, squash and sweet potatoes, but am really excited to start making more unusual ones like red peppers, pumpkin etc. Also, about your question about storage in your diaper bag, I found some containers online today (I apologize for not knowing exactly what it is called!) that have screw top lids, marketed specifically to avoid the problem you just posed. Try to google this and see what you come up with. If I find it again, I will repost.

I'll look them up! Thanks for the info.

Apple, pear, peache, nectarine, prune, and butternut squash are really good too.

For most skinned fruits(except apples, they cook better boiled), put an inch of water in a shallow baking pan and cook at 400 until the skin puckers. You'll know its cooked enough if the skin slides off easily, about 40 minutes, except pear, which takes 10-15. I found that with most fruit, I don't have to add any liquid to them.

Do you ever mix things together? I have experimented with a lot of mixes. Apple with sweet potato or butternut squash is really good. Well, sweet ptoato any most anything is good, apple, pear, prunes, peas, banana...

I mix fruits together too. My fave so far is pear, apple, and prune. It's really good and it helps quickly with a constipated baby! Or adult, if that's the case.

    Re: Freezing food

i use tupperwear or glass small bowls. available at target cooking stores ect...

     i love this ladies books:http://www.annabelkarmel.com/

good combos are chicken/sweetpotato, peas/carrot/potato, chicken/apple/, broccoli/carrot/salmon, pasta/tomato/veggies, ect.... fruits go well with veggies and veggies go well with starches, anything you make you can puree (minus spicy, salty, sugary foods) get her or him used to wahtever you already cook. then its easier as a toddler!!

    good luck~

I wanted to add something. After my first post, I read up on some of these foods and tried a few. I found that avacados can freeze very well IF you add just a little lime juice. It kept its nice bright green color and everything! I then made some combos like avacado/banana, peach and banana etc and those both froze well also. I did not try to freeze just banana, but these are so easy to mash, it really shouldn't be necessary. I have some red peppers I am going to try tonight, I will let you know how it goes!

I'll have to try that! Daniel loves avocado a lot but it doesn't keep long in the fridge after it's cut. it seems to do better if the pit is left in though.

How does your baby do with the lime juice? Does the acidity give him diaper rash?

Also, did you just mash and freeze the banana? I tired cooking then freezing them but it got really lumpy.

I do a lot of my baby's food raw. Mango freezes really well and is easy to puree.

    Re: Freezing food

I just put a teaspoon or so of lime juice, and I noticed no change in his bowell movements. I fed him peaches mixed with banana, however, and this made them very loose and gave him a red bottom, so I do think he would have had a reaction like that if there had been more in there. Just a little bit should do the trick. I have not frozen bananas on their own, rather mixed with peaches or avacado, so I am not sure how they would do solo. I sliced them and then added them to the food processor with the peaches, and simply mashed them together with the avacado.
