    Diaper Rash Ointment

I want to start cloth diapering. I understand you can't use regular diaper rash cream on cloth. What do you use for diaper rash with cloth diapers, and where do you buy it? Oh yeah, and how much does it cost?

We have yet to use it, since our DD is only 10 days old, but when we bought our cloth diapers and wipes, we got them is a big bundle and it came with Lusa Oragnics Baby Booty Balm.  We bought everything at a local store in Madison, WI, called Happy Bambino.  They have a website and do some internet orders.  But you may be able to find it somewhere else.  It is all natural and organic.  The other option is to get a roll of disposable liners.  That way whatever ointment you use won't get on the diapers.  I just read that on the Bum Genius website.

I just use the Avia paper towels that are almost like cloth as a liner to keep the cream from getting on the diapers.  I have not really had to use any though bc the cloth diapers breathe so well.  I have only needed diaper rash cream about 5 times and my little man is 6 months old.

I took a local cloth diapering class before we started at www.abbyslane.com. We are local so I could take her class. She had yet to find a diaper cream that does not make the diaper smell or wick. She recommended to me to cut out fleece the shape of inside of the diaper (get scrap pieces at local sewing store) and use it as a barrier between baby and the cloth diaper. She said the liners don't work as the diaper cream can make it thru the liners and most other materials. I've found her advice to be true. I actually leave a fleece liner in the diaper every time I diaper so I can use it as a reusable liner and just wash the poopies off it in the toilet instead of having to get the poppy on the actual diaper. Then I wash the fleece liner with the diapers. If I have to use some diaper cream, I separate the liners and wash them separate from the diapers and I wash them in bleech first to get the cream out of them compeletely. I still use disposables if I have a really bad diaper rash that won't go away. THat way I can slather on the diaper cream and not worry about it. Doesn't happen very often. The fleece liner actually wicks the moisture away from baby into the diaper, so he stays drier. About the only time we get a rash is if he eats something that his skin is sensitive to on the way out. Good luck!~

I cloth diaper twins and the only time either one of them has ever needed diaper cream was when they were on antibiotics for ear infections or when we put them in sposies to go on a trip or something.  They are 9 months old.  I never believed that babies get fewer diaper rashes with cloth.  I always thought it was just something that the CD companies say to get you to switch.  But I am now a firm believer!!!  My baby's butts are always happy and smooth!  Even my dh (who was adamantly opposed to using CD's at first) has been blown away by it.  I never thought it would happen, but he has become such a CD advocate.  He talks to everyone who will listen about how great they are.

I just let my kids get 'nakey butt' time in between changes, and after baths (when I can). If they get yeast infections and I need to use cream they wear disposables (mostly because I don't want the yeast on the cloth, because it's a pain to disinfect it from yeast) -- but with cloth, it's a rarity. I've had to do it maybe twice between 3 kids.
