  Worried... Reply Contact My son will be 1 years old the end of next month and I have a few questions. I am not sure if this has anything to do with SIDS but I want to be sure... Ever since he has been a new born he has had a hard time eating/ swallowing his milk ect. I have been trying to get him started on some table food and he will have nothing to do with it. Everything I give him he chokes on. The last thing I gave him was one little rice crispy and he choked...... What I am trying to get at is some knows causes of SIDS the opening of the air way is too small/narrow??? I am thinking that is what is going on with my son.

  Re: Worried... Reply Contact You should speak with your pediatrician about a feeding evaluation. Or do a referral to your state's Early Intervention Program. It sounds like your son is having difficulties with his feeding and this could be due to a variety of things... chewing difficulties, swallowing coordination problems, "lazy" epiglottis, etc. Feeding therapy is very helpful in addressing this issue and the sooner you start, the better. If he is aspirating small amounts of food into his lungs when he chokes, he could be at high risk for things like pneumonia. Please address this soon and not later because feeding issues often times can get worse, not better with time. I'm not trying to scare you at all, just want you to be informed. I do evaluations for my state's Early Intervention Program and we see feeding troubles all the time. I would not be concerned about a SIDS connection by the way. Hope this helps!

Reply Contact My daughter was the same way, she would choke on her own saliva-let alone formula, food, any thing!  We had a swallow study done & her esphogus was not fully developed, we had to thicken everything she ate or drank until she was about 1 year old.  The thickening stopped the choking & also helped her strengthen those muscles.  My regular ped did not chatch this, I took her to a pediatric gastroenterologist & he caught it right away.  Hope everything works out for you!

SIDS has no symptoms and happens suddenly and there is no known reason for it just many theories. I have done a ton of research on SIDS after losing my daughter and I have never even heard anything like this brought up. I would talk to your ped with any concerns.
