    Colic or Gastroesophageal Reflux?

I have been doing some research on the difference between colic and gastroesophageal reflux. Does anyone have any experience with either but more specifically with gastroesophageal reflux? I think my three week old has this condition - he is very fussy when he first wakes from his naps and immediately after feedings. Most of the time he seems to throw up nearly everything he just consumed. Sometimes it comes out his nose and often it seems as though he chokes on it and then has a hard time catching his breath. This is when my heart stops. If anyone has any experience or similar symptons it would be great to share ideas with you.

    Re: Colic or Gastroesophageal Reflux?

My first son has colic and it completely went away as soon as I stopped eating dairy.  The large animal proteins are really hard for their immature digestive systems to digest.  I did not eat dairy with any of my kids for the first 6 months.  As a result, my babies rarely cried.  I really think that colic is caused by animal proteins found in cows milk.

But I did not have any issues with spitting up.  Good luck trying to find out what the problem is!!

I think your baby definitely has reflux...especially when you said the spit is coming out of the nose as well as the mouth. My baby is now 4 weeks old and has been on Prevacid for a week now and she was exclusively breastfed--go figure. I was on here today because I think there needs to be a separate message board for reflux babies because it's stressful and us moms need support! It's challenging...a reflux baby will act like they're still hungry even after they've eaten and they will arch their backs and stick their legs straight out and cry and cry, but it's because of the painful acid that is in their throats. They like to be held upright for 30 minutes after they've eaten and if they're having a "reflux spell". Mine is a very fidgety unsound sleeper and chokes on a bottle (I believe because of her reflux). It's tough...I think you should mention what you've observed with your baby to your pediatrician and get some meds for it to see if it helps. Note....nothing will stop the baby from spitting up a little bit, the meds help with the painful acid. Good luck
