    Relactation help!

My baby has an ear infection and I feel like its my fault. I BF for about 4.5 months and then my milk started drying up no matter how much I nursed. I went to the DR and they told me I have post pardum hyperthyroidism and its affecting my milk supply. SO I had to give my baby formula. Now hes sick and my pediatricain told me to look forward to a long winter because my antibodies he will get sick alot. I really want to continue BFing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you had a thyroid study done lately? The hyperactive part of postpartum thyroiditis is only temporary, but it does affect milk production. For some women, the hyperactive phase only lasts for about 6 weeks, but sometimes it's longer. Mine lasted an entire year. Ask your doctor to check your thyroid and see if your pedi will give you a prescription for Reglan to get your milk going again. Have you weaned completely or are you still getting some milk?

HUGS, mama!  It is NOT your fault!  I hope the thyroid study shows that your thyroid is back to normal, but if not, you did the best you could.  I'm thinking methimazole is incompatible w/ bf, right?  I have to pill my cat and I get paranoid about washing my hands!

Kids get sick - even breast fed kids.  My 13 month old breast feeds and she has croup!  And her 2 year old brother has the tail end of a cold - and HE was on formula from 3 months.  You'd think HE would be the one with croup, but no.

Also, I was on formula from day one and had a couple of years of ear infections, no biggie.  My sister at least got colostrum, but she was also ff.  She needed tubes in her ears.  It's more about anatomy than mom's antibodies.  My daughter has caught every cold her brother has this year, even with bf.  Hers were generally mild (until now) but she still got sick.  If your son has weird eustachian tubes, he'll get ear infections a lot - but that would be true even WITH bf.  HUGS!

PTU is compatible with breastfeeding, but most endocrinologists don't treat the hyper phase of PPT because it's transient.
