  My baby's amblical cord is swelling Reply Contact Dear moms, My baby is 9 months old but Iam worried because her amblical cord (belly button) is swelling. It has been gradually increasing in size since she was 4 months. When I try to press it I feel some vacuum inside. Please help, I do not know what could be the problem. I talked to her Peadiatrician and I was told that the hole will close with time, otherwise she would need an operation at 2 year's. Is there anything I can do so that I do not subject my todler to an operation at that early age? Thank you. Sue

Normally, this wouldn't be noticeable until the child is much older but he also presented with an ompthalomesonteric duct (I did the best I could on the spelling). He had a funky umbilical that wouldn't seem to heal. Basically, his intestine was turning inside out through his umbilical cord. THREE PEDIATRICIANS didn't know what this was when they saw it. One thought it was an umbilical granuloma but too big to be handled in the office so he sent us to a pediatric surgeon. The surgeon took one look and properly diagnosed my son. A quick surgery (less than a day in the hospital) and he is good as gold now. Go back to your pediatrician and INSIST on a referral to a pediatric surgeon. This is your child and if YOU think something is wrong, it is your RIGHT to pursue all avenues until you are satisfied with your child's diagnosis. No one knows your baby better than you.
