My baby takes reglan for acid reflux... I haven't experienced fussiness from it becaus ehe started the medication in NICU. Does it help if you lay him to sleep on an incline? That's another thing the nurses had me do for him.

    Re: Acid Reflux

I'm not usually this board- just saw it by chance. My son had this from birth until he was about a year old. He took Reglan and Zantac but was still MISERABLE!! After we stopped the reglan he was much better. i guess for some babies it tightens the muscles too much. So I guess its a matter of trying different meds and formulas until you find what works for your poor little one. We actually ended up using a formula called Nutramigen which just about broke us, so I think finding the right meds first is very important. He also seemed more comforted when swattled up ridiculously tightly even thiough he fought it at first.. Harvey Karp's Happiest Baby on the Block DVD was my life saver. That and the Miracle blanket. It is really hard and exhausting! Good luck and Feel free to PM me!

    Re: Acid Reflux

My son had AR at birth. I was trying to breastfeed and thought his fussiness was do to the trouble we were having getting him to latch on. We didn't know he had Acid Reflux until he stopped breathing when he was 3 days old. My husband had to give him mouth-to-mouth to get him to start breathing again and his color came back within a few minutes. At first the doctor didn't believe us until it happened again 3 hours later in the parking lot of his office. This time the doctor had to give him mouth-to-mouth. He was put on Zantac (0.5 ml 3x day) and it has made such a difference. As he got bigger (doubled in weight) we had to increase his dosage (1.0ml 3x day). We haven't had anymore episodes and he's not fussy and is such a great eater! We also put an incline underneath the head of his bed. Other advice from the doctor which we follow is to keep him upright while feeding, burp him every 1 oz (or 3-5 minutes if nursing) and to keep him upright with his legs hanging freely for 10-15 mins after each feeding. Unfortunately keeping him upright is hard - he can't be in a pumpkin seat, etc because it forces his legs towards his chest which makes it easier for the acid to come up. I basically have to hold him up against my chest. But...if he feels better it's worth it.

    Re: Acid Reflux

My daughter is one month old and has been diagnosed with reflux. We ended up in Children's hospital with her at 2 weeks old after we witnessed her having a strange episode of what seemed like breath holding and spasms. After having a barium swallow done and an upper GI our pediatrician detemined it was reflux. She was put on axid twice a day and alimentum formula mixed with rice cereal (1 teaspoon per ounce). She rarely crys or gets fussy, and there is no warning of when she is going to vomit or have an episode. She does projectile vomit, but not after every feeding. The episodes really scare me and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this with their baby. When she is having an episode/spasm she becomes very red, puts her head back, arches her back, gasps, and looks very scared. Sometimes it happens after she has vomitted and sometimes it happens without vomitting. Often when she vomits it shoots out of her nose and mouth at the same time. The doctor has witnessed it and says it is not a life threatening event, and says it is due to the esophagus spasming. It still really scares me though! We purchased a special wedge made for babies with reflux and she sleeps well on it. We never lay her flat which is challenging. Has anyone experienced any similar episodes with their reflux baby?
