Is anybody getting the H1N1 Vaccine for the kids or themselves?

I'm soooo conflicted!  Don't know if I should or not.  I'd like to hear some of your reasons whether they are for or against.  Thanks!

we chose not to get them.

I don't like the idea of the mercury or formaldehide in them. Sp? It also takes about 2-3 weeks for them to start being able to prevent. We got H1N1 here and used a homeopathic remedy and got it MUCH less severe then we were hearing.

I don't like the idea of putting that in our bodies and I am the type for vaccines. I have heard these types do more harm then good though, not going to quote but that was from a doctor.

For us, yes. A couple of reasons. One is that my kiddos are in the at-risk group. I also feel it's an additional risk that Cady is going to school and that I work in a school. Clinical trials on the vaccine have been very favorable. It's the same process of developing a flu shot every year and i get the kids a flu shot so I will do the same with the H1N1. I know that the vaccine will not prevent it but if a vaccine can help make it less severe I'm in favor. The info that I'm reading too is that they are now seeing great results with just one dose versus the regular two doses that are generally needed for babies. I like that.

I feel the exact same way!  I already got the vaccine and did so for a number of reasons.  Top one being that I'm pregnant and was at the top of the high priorities list and would do anything and everything to protect myself and my unborn baby.  Plus, I work daily with kiddos and am constantly going into homes meeting with families and dealing with the public and constantly surrounded by "germs".  The only real physical problem I had from the shot was that my arm was a little sore, just like it was when I got the flu shot.  Other than that, I feel perfectly fine...physically again.  Easton would have gotten the shot this past Tuesday, but he ended up being sick with a fever and couldn't get it, but he will be getting it as well due to being in a daycare/preschool daily and constantly surrounded by germs and all.  And like Paula said, although the vaccine won't prevent him/me from getting it, will help lessen the effects if we do.

We almost never do the seasonal flu shots nor will we do the H1N1 flu shot either. Toby contracted one of the Type A Influenza strains (which may or may not have been H1N1), and the rest of us (myself and the girls) got a mild version as well. I figure it's better to naturally build up immunity to these viruses than to artificially do so with vaccines, especially with the way it has been spread around us so rampantly. Chances are we've already been exposed and built up an immunity of some sort, so there'd be no point in getting the vaccines, too. I know I'm in a high risk category not only because I'm pregnant but also because I'm in my 20's, but like I said, a natural immunity is better than an artificially induced one. There have been favorable results in trials, but there has yet to be a full flu season of testing and results to know the full spectrum of side affects and related issues later down the road. I'd rather take the risk of getting sick than take the risk of getting a vaccine that isn't yet fully understood or proved the best option.

Ashley, you said it perfectly.  I feel exactly the same way.  Honestly, I believe a lot of this is hyped up by the media, pushed by the pharmaceutical companies, who are making millions off this.  I'm a conspiracy theorist when it comes to health issues.  lol

I have to agree with both of you.

Here they are laying off nurses and shutting down NEW wards in BRAND NEW hospitals for lack of funding. Yet they have these MILLIONS of dollars to push out a product that has not be FULLY tested? Use that money to open the beds and pay our doctors and nurses!

I thought the nasal was free and clear of mercury and formaldehyde?! I know the shot was not because it was a double dose.......Andrew did get it because he goes to school 2 days a week and for some other reasons, but I think each parent does what is right in "the households" circumstance?! Right?

Re: Is anybody getting the H1N1 Vaccine for the kids or themselves?

We've already done flu shots.  Our doctor only had H1N1 for one day, so we weren't able to get it, but if they do, I will get it for my boys.  A lot of kids have died in my area from the flu, but none from the vaccine.

It is true that those chemicals are not in the nasal spray.  Be aware, though, that the nasal spray is a mild, live form of the virus (so you can technically get the flu from it), while the shot is a dead virus (so it cannot cause the flu).  That combined with the fact that Ander and I have asthma means we will have the shot, if it becomes available.

I'm very conflicted myself.  I don't believe there's a ton of the vaccine available in my area as of right now.  But Raven needs to go for her 18month check up sometime next week, and I'm definitely going to ask about my doctor's views on it.

Calli just had the H1N1 nasal one yesterday. I would get it if I could, but they are only giving it to certain age groups and high risk groups. I always get a seasonal flu shot and will continue to do so for myself and for Calli.

I got the regular flu shot, but the boys didn't. Last week the H1N1 was a requirement for me to be allowed to do clinical in a hospital but since the short supply it isn't a requirement but more of a if you can get it then get it.

We didn't get it - but I would if I had to.  Dante is not in school yet and from what I understand there is only so much to go around.
