    What languages do you speak?

Just curious to know what language you speak, which one your SO speaks and what languages your kid(s) will speak. What language do you speak with you SO?

I was raised to speak English and Dutch, dh was raised only speaking Dutch. My kids will be speaking English and Dutch. I wished we could press in another language like French or something but, first of all, we both suck at French or any other language, and second: we barely have the time and resources to teach them both English and Dutch.
Me and dh speak Dutch when we're together, but sometimes if I'm off in my own world or really mad, I will suddenly switch to English which always freaks him outStick out tongue
    how about you?

I speak Czech, SO English. Obviously I speak English as well, lol. So we are going to do those two. I would like to later teach my DS Slovak as well, since it is my second language but first will do just Czech and English. I hope he can then learn something else at school too. Spanish or such.

wow, I am so amaze of the many different languages that we all want to teach our kids. I speak Kreole and Fench my son's father speaks English and we both are learning spanish.. We botth agree we want our son to learn Kreole an French. Like many of you I am not sure when to start and how. I work at a school and I worry if he start off with two languages his English vocabulary will be less. Our kinders get tested on their vocabulary and in second grade they are place on gifted programs base on their vocabulary. I might wait till he learn his english alphabet, colors, basic words and basic phares and start to read. So I thinking about 5 to 6 . I will definetlly start with foods.

Finally someone else who is going thru this. I'm Haitian and our baby's father is American. I've been teaching him Creole. Just a few days ago I was asking him how we are going to teach our child both languages. I want him/her to speak my language but I would be out numbered in the household. I haven't figured out how to teach yet.

Re: What languages do you speak?

Hi everyone... I speak english and german and my husband speaks spanish and portuguese... We plan to raise the baby bilingual in spanish and english. I plan to wait to introduce german until the english and spanish are easy for her. And as far as portuguese goes, it is similar to spanish so over time, my husband will practice it as well with our child. We don't want to overwhelm her, so we plan to start with the two. As well, we have been learning baby sign language so that we can better communicate with her when she is still trying to work out the double languages. Im interested in any advice anyone has on when to start certain things and when not too. As well, I can understand spanish, but cannot respond in it, so should my husband and i only speak our languages in front of her, even if we are talking to eachother? or is it okay for him to speak in both english and spanish?

Re: What languages do you speak?

I speak German and English and my husband speaks English as well as some Spanish. Our daughter is almost 2 years old and speaks both German and English. I gathered from previous posts that a lot of you are worried on how you teach your children a second language. You really don't teach them, you just speak to them. Since my daughter was born I only spoke German to her with no exceptions. If other people are around or if we have a playdate, I repeat what I say in English after I said it in German, so that other people/kids know what I am saying.

She has a good 60-70 Word Vocabulary combined for English and German. If I ask her a question in German she will give me the answer in German, if my husbands asks in English, she usually replies in English. She goes to a English speaking daycare and I am the only one that speaks German to her. Point being, you really don't need to worry and think about it too much, just speak to your baby in the language you choose and stick with it.

    good Luck

I speak Romanian, English and Spanish. I speak to my daughter in Romanian, my DH uses with her English and my in-laws Spanish. She is 1 year old and she seems to understand all 3 languages with no problems, she is not really talking yet though...

German and English. German is my 1st language but I speak English fluently (with a bad southern accent, lol) My DD doesn't speak German but that is because her father dissaproved of me speaking to her in German. DS is starting to pick up on German. He says ja instead of yes but no instead of nein.
