    18-months old and biting!

    Hi everyone!

I've got a biter.  Addie bit Hadley 4 times today and she also bites me and my husband.  Any suggestions on how to stop this behavior with such a youngster?  You tell her no in a stern voice and she laughs. She thinks it is funny and apparently great fun.  Any suggestions welcome, please help!!!!

Are you using time out yet?   When my two were that age time out was a booster seat on a kitchen chair in the corner of the room so we could buckle them into the seat.  We didn't need a buckle after a while.  Patience went through a biting stage around that age.  Time out really did the trick for her.  We would also put a favorite toy or two in time out for several minutes to make the effect more drastic.  Good luck!

    Hi Cheryl,

We went thru this for a long time and I finally called the pediatrician. He told us to let Kaitlin bite her sister back after a attack. I hate to say it but it worked. Aubrey never bite anyone again, it was like she had no idea biting hurt.

    Hope this helps you out

I have been going thought this too.  Gwen bites Gilbert a lot.  I have had not idea how to stop this.  I have been telling Gwen no and then comforting Gilbert but that seems not to work.  I will have think about having Gilbert bit her.  I just afraid Gilbert will start bitting.

I remember biting. My oldest was a biting terror at about that age. In retrospect I should have tried time-outs, but I hadn't discovered that yet. What cured my son is one day, when he was around 2, I was leaning over him trying to buckle him kicking and screaming into his carseat when he hauled off and bit my square on the boob. Without even thinking I grabbed his arm and bit him back. Not hard enough to do any damage, but enough to get the message across. He never bit again - even at day care. I felt like a total heel, but its hard to argue with results.

Damn good idea about buckling them in!  I'm SO gonna try that!!!  I've got a runner (who happens to be a biter, too...ugh).  Thanks!

Daniel was a biter for a while -- every once in a while he still slips.  And Simon is starting it too -- but he only bites me (on the shoulder)......There is a kids book that day care suggested we read to him (but I can't remember what it's called unfortunately -- I will try to remember to look it up later today).  We never did though.....

What eventually worked for Daniel (and it took a WHILE) was IMMEDIATE time out (no warning) when he bit -- also we kept telling him "NO BITING -- IT HURTS!!!!!!!" every time he bit someone.  He started repeating it after a while.  Overall, things didn't stop for about 6 months after it started (except for the rare slips).

    Hope this helps!
