    Anyone here?

I'm just wondering if anyone is lurking here...or if anyone ever stops by.  I do see that there are no posts,so this will be the first one!  I'm looking for someone else who has hyperthyroidism or any other thyroid problems.

Hi, I rarely come on this board these days but I wanted to reply to your post. I have Hyperthyroidism. I was diagnosed 2 months into my pregnancy in July 2006. I take PTU as recommended by my Endocrin doc and have been on it since I was breastfeeding my daughter since it was the safest option for me and she was born/didn't suffer from any possible effects of my condition which is Graves' Disease. I can go on but I'd feel a little awkward if you never see this or respond lol

I have hypothyroid & Hashimotos syndrome.  I have an underactive thyroid & take medication for it.  It is related to my Type I diabetes.  Wow, when I write it out I sound very sickly don't I?  I don't usually notice I guess, It just life for me & I try to concentrate on the good things & don't let a disease or 2 get me down!Stick out tongue

I have hypothyroidism (I think it's Hashimoto's) and a nodule on my thyroid.  I normally see an endo every six months for a blood draw and an ultrasound, but since I got pregnant I've been seeing him every month.

    Re: Anyone here?

Thanks everyone!!  I just checked in and realized that I hadn't posted any updates.   Or even my history! lol Here goes.

June 2005, miscarriage at 14 weeks gestation.  Sept 2005, pregnant. Had a baby girl May 2006 via c-section due to breech presentation.  Sept 2006...pregnant again.  June 2007 had a baby girl via VBAC, no problems, except she was 11 days overdue.  No induction, just a long pregnancy! lol

December 2007, I went in for some bloodwork and a checkup.  TSH 0.010. Total T4 normal.  Diagnosis....post partum thyroiditis hyperthyroidism phase.  I got a second opinion which resulted in the same diagnosis.

My GP ordered an ultrasound and iodine uptake scan.  Ultrasound showed a multinodular goiter and the uptake scan showed no concentrations consistent with hypOthyroidism.

Follow up bloodwork was normal.  TSH and FT4 in the normal range.  No antibodies either.

Next set of bloodwork 2 months later also normal.  June 2007 bloodwork shows up TSH <0.003 FT4 borderline high.  Endo calls and gives me a prescription for PTU 50mg twice a day.  I take a pregnancy test, it's negative, so I start taking the meds.

6 weeks later, my bloodwork comes back.  TSH 0.010. FT4 normal.  Thyroid ultrasound enlarged thyroid, 10mm nodule, still multinodular goiter.  No real change from my previous ultrasound 6 months prior.

I had an appt with my endo last wednesday, august 13, and we decided that since PTU wasn't working for me, I needed to go on methimazole.  So, I'm now on that.  Also, with my enlarged thyroid, family history, the fact that I want more kids and that PTU doesn't work for me, I need to have part or all of my thyroid removed.  I am calling a surgeon tomorrow and will be setting up an appt to see her and talk to her.  I am really nervous, but I feel that this is my best course of action.  Since taking the methimazole, eventhough it's only been a couple days, I am feeling much better.  PTU made me very nauseous and I was still very tired, anxious, hot/cold, and shakey.  Not to mention flakey! lol  Now I'm feeling better, but since the doc won't keep me on methimazole when I get pregnant, I need to do something a bit more permanent.

There is a strong family history of thyroid disease.  My mother has had her entire thyroid removed, my grandmother has had part or all of hers removed, my grandmother's sister had hers removed.  I am glad that I caught my problems early on and am able to treat it, but that doesn't make me any less worried for myself or my daughters and future children.

    Re: Anyone here?

Well, apparently I have post-partum thyroiditis, but I'm still going through diagnosis.  I have a sonogram scheduled next week, and then we'll see what happens.

    Re: Anyone here?

I wish you luck in your diagnosis and the sonogram.  I hope that it is just pp thyroiditis and that it goes away quickly!

Mine never went away.  I have a total thyroidectomy scheduled for the week before thanksgiving.  I'm on methimazole 20mg once a day and I don't think it's doing any good.  I had my blood drawn this week, so I'll get the results soon. PTU doesn't do any good for me either.

Even with all of that going on, we are still hoping to TTC by May of 09. I just hope that all of my levels get normal quickly, that my extra weight drops off and that I have no trouble getting pregnant and no trouble during the pregnancy!

This is such a rough things to deal with. I hope that your's gets better quickly and you have no more thyroid problems!

    Re: Anyone here?

I dont know if you check this tread anymore, but I was diagnosed with Graves Disease about 6 months after I had my daughter. I was given my choices and chose the Methimazole. The good thing is the fact that I ended up being one of the lucky ones where the Methimizole actually helped even my Graves out. The not good part is the fact that it happened too late to keep me from having a miscarriage in July. I ended up getting pregnant while still on the meds (totally by accident) and I personally think its why I miscarried (even though the docs cant give me a 100% answer). Anyways, I'll essentially spend the rest of my life checking my thyroid because there is a decent possibility that it will go out of whack again. I hope everything goes well for you all. Take care.... ~Amber

    Re: Anyone here?

    Thank you for your response.

Updates....I had my thyroid removed 8 days ago because I was not responding to the methimazole either.  I tried PTU, didn't work, tried methimazole, didn't work either, so I had it removed.  I am glad that I did because they found cancerous cells in a nodule I had, but since the nodule itself was only 1cm, the doctors wouldn't biopsy it.  I am glad that it is done and overwith and now I can concentrate on getting healthy again!
