I have not heard any of those before of being dangerous, but the thing about cats is you should avoid their litter boxes cause you can get sick from it....I forget what its called but thats the only thing I know you are suppose to avoid.  If I was you I would call your OB/midwife what ever you are going to and ask them to be 100% sure also, so your MIL cannot sit there and say they are dangerous, etc.  Hope I helped some, good luck!

I don't think she's intentionally being evil, she, like so many people, is clinging to old wive's tales...completely untrue beliefs from days of old. She's almost right about the cat thing- do not clean a litterbox, or kiss the bottoms of their cute, fuzzy little feet(they may have stepped in a little pooh). It's called toxoplasmosis, and it's carried through feces, most commonly a cat's. I have 3 furballs, and there's no reason they need to go anywhere, as mine use cat doors and prefer going outside to potty. Thank God! Anything else she warns you about, ask your ob/gyn for their opinion.

Some doctors are more cautious about cats than others.  The thing with petting them is that they push the litter around with their feet, then lick their feet, then lick the rest of themselves.  As for driving, I guess the steering wheel would be bad in a crash, but what wouldn't be bad in a crash?  Otherwise I think she's probably just terribly old fashioned and of the belief that pregnant women are delicate flowers that could blow apart in the wind.  I say ignore her or ask your Dr, if you're worried.

i was told you can drive as long as your up to it. as for hiking and biking, if you did it regularly pre-pregnancy then it is ok. just make sure to stay hydrated and not to over work yourself. ditto what everyone else said about cats, no litter boxes, and avoid playing with them in anyway that could cause them to break the skin. i just gave my cat a flea bath a couple weeks ago and i got a pretty nasty scratch, the dr said to go to the ER, i just went to my dr instead. they decided not to give me the meds for toxoplasmosis, they just kept an eye on it and told me what to watch for.

the only thing that i heard is that you shouldn't touch the cat's litter box and who ever that deals with the litter box should always wash hands because of this bacteria or something that causes birth defects. everything else idk.

yeah, these seem  alittle over the top.  However, with driving, or flying, or any other long distance travelling, you should be taking breaks from sitting and walking around as much as possible, or propping your feet up above heart level.  With prolonged sitting (even at work) you can develop blood clots, which is why it is important to get up and walk to keep circulation going.  Other than that, it is perfectly safe to drive.  With hiking and other "excercise" related activity-don't push it too much, and keep it at a level your body was used to or a slightly lower level.  And ALWAYS talk to your doctor before taking advice from other people.

Bike riding is fine, just take it easy..... no marathons! :) I have never heard of no hiking, as long as you keep yourself well hydrated and rest every once in a while.... you should know your own limit. Driving is fine too, you can not avoid being in a car, so you might as well drive it! Wearing your seatbelt ofcourse. Petting cats should be fine, but like someone else said, avoid the litter box. The amonea and bacteria can make you sick. Walking the dag should be fine, as long as it's not pulling you along. Your mother-in-law may just be old fashioned or paranoid. These days they have done so many tests and studies that I am sure you would have read about it somewhere if it were that bad for you. Take it easy, enjoy your pregnancy and don't stress.

Ha, I have a crazy MIL as well and she didn't give me too much advice when I was pregnant, but after I had my daughter she felt compelled to tell me all the things I was doing wrong. Must be a MIL thing. Obivously the cat litter has been adressed, but your question about hiking and excerise...I was just wondering about that issue as well for myself, and my midwife told me that as long as I don't have asthma and that I'm not working out so hard that I can't catch my breath then I'm fine. But I'm out there hiking and walking and swimming and it is so good for you while you're pregnant. Don't stop. Take what she says and bounce it off your OB. It's better to be safe than sorry. Oh and driving, just make sure the steering wheel it up a little higher and your lap belt is down below your belly and across your hip bones. You'll be fine. No worries! Good luck with the MIL. I'm so glad mine lives in a different state!

Hey Kayla! Everyone is right when it comes to the cat issue( toxoplasmosis is serious) but as for the biking issue......my ob, and my personal trainer (aint I lucky) said no no no. Unless it's a stationary bike. They said the reason is something to with how are ligaments are loosening up or stretching it feels like, and we can lose our balance to easy. But they did say a stationary bike is ok to use. And you can walk as long as you are up to it, just keep yourself hydrated and wear very comfy shoes. Our hospital has a number 1-800-vita-line that I call when I have any questions and can't get up with my o/b or my o/b nurse. Maybe yours does too, all you hafta do is call your hospital and ask to speak to a nurse if you don't ask your doctor. Can you believe my sister said I can't take baths anymore...just showers. You hear some crazy things when your pregnant. Someone even told me that I cant have helium ballons or use helium to blow up balloons because then the baby will have a very weird high pitched voice lol! Well I hope all goes well with you.
