I don't think there's any harm in it.  With my son I waited until out of the 1st trimester, but with this one I wasn't going to.  However, because I just don't feel like going or getting it done I'm waiting.  I too need one badly.  It's been hot & a couple of nights I sweated so bad that it's now all kinked up.  I don't know how my hairdressers going to separate it to get the relaxer in.  You also might want to see if you can stretch it out to every 8 weeks instead of every 6 if you're still concerned.

as far as I have heard and seen, it is best to avoid all chemicals during pregnancy, even hair chemicals.  I have seen pregnant women have their hair done, dyed, etc.  but the chemicals have to stay at least 1/2 inch off the roots of the hair to avoid direct skin contact.  I would definitely ask your doc.  and make sure you go to a dresser that knows how to handle pregos.

There is no research that shows any direct negative effects of chemicals used during hair processing on fetal development. Many women opt to limit their hair style regimens because of the chemicals just to be safe. Ask your doctor if you have any questions, however, most will say its fine. Mine brought up the fact that hairdressers get pregnant too, and most of them can't quit their job for 9 months and stay away from the chemicals. They may wear gloves but they still breathe in the fumes daily. Their rate of medical problems with their babies is no more than anyone elses. It's all really what you feel comfortable with, I always waited until after the first trimester. A good suggestion from a previous post was not to let the chemicals touch your skin if you are really nervous about it.

I have been to the salon many times both times I was pregnant. My stylist keeps chemicals from directly contacting my scalp and makes me wear a mask to aviod breathing chemicals. They can be harmful to the baby. She did say however, that its not best for ME to do them b/c you have 2 put your hands over your head, which can cause stress to the baby, so they say. Also, dying your hair weakens it, so during pregnancy, if u think about it, dont do it. Hope that helps.
