Help- baby won't take a bottle

We had a lot of trouble in the beginning with breastfeeding- finally after having to supplement with formula and the help of a nipple shield- we have been doing well with breastfeeding. He is still hooked on the nipple shield at 8 weeks. That is not my main concern anymore, now he won't take a bottle. I am going back to work in 5 weeks and I am stressing. I have tried Breastflow bottles, nuk, medela, playtex nurser and I just bought an avent that I will try tonight. He took a bottle fine as a newborn and off and on for the first 3 weeks and now he won't even suck on a bottle. My husband has been helping me, but he won't take it from him either. It is getting frustrating....... any suggestions??????

Re: Help- baby won't take a bottle

I've had this problem with two of my kids, here's a few things that might help:

    1) What do you do when he won't take a bottle?  At first, I would just nurse him after we tried for a while....until I realized that might be why he wouldn't take it, he could just hold out for the boob.  Then I started NOT giving him the breast until after we'd tried the bottle for two feedings in a row.  Sometimes these would be hours apart.  For example...try the bottle first feed in the morning (he may be hungry enough to take it).  If he doesn't take it, don't nurse him, instead wait until the next feeding and try the bottle again.

    2) Try sneaking the bottle to him while he's still half asleep.  Don't wait until he's HUNGRY to feed him, get him up when he's still a little sleepy and see if you can 'sneak' it in.

    3) Try lots of bottles, which you have.  Mine liked either the Avent, or the Playtex Natural Latch (these were silicone and so soft!)

That's about all I can think of now...good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions- He finally took the bottle on Wednesday, so it took over 2 weeks of trying. He will take a playtex nurser natural latch (latex) nipple with the flat nipple and the flat wide base. He is also looking like he may take the Sassy Mam. So relieved.

Schweew...congrats!  It's such a nice feeling when it finally happens!  Glad to hear it worked out!
