WYATT WILLIAM WADE
Born: 31st October 2008 (Halloween)
Time: 3:38pm
Weight: 7lbs 10oz
Length: 47cm long (18.5 inches)
Head Circumference: 34.5 cm (13.6 inches)
Labour lasted: 14.5 hrs (not to mention the 11 days off contractions before that)
I started having contractions on and off for 11 days prior to the “BIG EVENT”, and just when I had relaxed and come to terms with the fact it could continue for many more days, I go into labour all on my own. (3 cheers for that)! After going to the doctors and finding out baby had disengaged and turned posterior, I felt like giving up, but these minor things weren’t gunna stop my little guy.
At 9pm on the 30th Oct I felt a little crampy when I went to bed, but didn’t think anything of it since been happening for nearly 2 weeks. I woke up again about 11pm and had a MAJOR bloody show… I knew it was diff from what I had the previous week because this time the blood want old blood but fresh stuff and a tone more of it as well.. so I went back too bed thinking prob have a few more days to go yet. At one I woke up too go to the loo and started too notice I was having minor contractions. Every 8mins and lasting about a min each. I stayed in bed and they slowly got more painful to the point where I could only rest not sleep between them. I still thought they would stop so I didn’t ring the hosp for awhile. At 5:30am I called and they said too stay home till I had 2 in 10mins or felt like I can’t be at home any longer. Well they pretty much started too be a couple in 10 mins so figured I should call and go in and get checked. Still thinking it wasn’t actually the real thing. Get in there at 6:30am and wait for ages too be seen and the pains were a lot more intense and close (it was changeover).. Finally a midwife took me to be assessed. I was indeed having strong contractions and during each contraction I noticed the baby’s heart would plummet to 80-90 bpm. So I notify the midwife and we keep an eye on it. I get an internal and I am 4cms dilated. So I am taken over too birth suites (9 of us in labour at same time so it was chokers). This was about 8am, back on monitors and baby still having decels I’m worried but I’m assured it’s ok, for now. I had to have a canular in for antibiotics so this is where I endured a lot of pain. The first one was put in by a midwife and it hurt so bad, and when they started too put in the meds my arm swelled and they realized that it had tissued. So they get the doc in whom trys a new one, which failed as well… SO they call in the anesthesiologist too try... He gives me local and I didn’t feel a thing when he canulized (sp?) me! Thank goodness.
About 12 ish, I decided to have gas on hand... Because the pain was getting quite intense. I was checked internally again at 12:30 and I was 6cm. (btw bubs is still posterior). 12:45 pm I decide to get a shot of pethidine because I was tired and still had awhile to go. I’m really glad I did coz I could nap in between contractions. I still was on the gad as well, it started on low but I gradually needed it too be turned higher. At 2:30pm I was checked and only 7cms, and starting to feel pressure and need to push. Though I was trying not to. (Brought back memories from my first birth). The midwives came up with a theory, with the first labour I had I started pushing at 6cm, so they told me I had to have the epidural, so they loaded me up with fluids and I got the epi and half hour later I was fully dilated. At this point baby’s heart is still dropping and labour going really long – so they were gunna do a head scratch too make sure bubs was ok, can’t remember if they got to or not though. Anyways there theory was that I may have in my first birth dilated faster after the fluid load for the epi and they didn’t realize at the time that I had. So they decided to try giving me a bag of fluids. This was at 3pm and still 7cm, I was checked again coz I felt more pressure about 3:15 and I was 8cms, so they were then deciding what to do, at about 3:20 I started getting immense pressure and was pushing so hard, and getting told too stop. Since I was just checked and was only 8cm. Well I couldn’t stop, I got this urge and I pushed harder and all of a sudden no one’s telling me too stop. And I hear the midwives saying something about catching the baby, obviously the fluid load had worked and had dilated too 10cms in minutes. So I pushed, and BOY was this different too last time. I was quite scared but I was doing it and all without the epi. I was turned too my side and I held the closet thing I could find (being a rail attached to a bench) and I pushed with everything I had… ouch! Such a strange feeling, last time I was dead numb from the time I had the epi till 24hours after the birth. So I pushed and pushed, they had to push my hips back abit to help baby out. He came out with a hand by his face and the cord around his neck (which was causing the decels). I tell you it hurt, but it was well worth it. It was so much better not being sick and drugged after the birth and actually having strength to hold my baby for ages. After the baby came out, I still needed to push, so they gave me the placenta needle and out it came, in one more big push. I had one small tear inside (surprisingly my episiotomy scar was intact) and 2 small grazes. I was nervous that I tore and needed stitches though. So my little guy was born at 3:38pm (I know I txt saying 58 but I read it wrong lol). Quite a few hours later the doc came too stitch me up and boy I was scared, coz of all the pain I had after DD when I had stitches. I got my gas back and started puffing on it before doc used the local, thank goodness I got the gas then coz even with it the pain from the local hurt. He started to stitch and I kind of felt it so got more local but still felt it abit but said don’t worry and kept puffing away.
The stitches were only inside so I can’t even feel them, the only thing that hurt was when I pee and gets into the graze (which now doesn’t hurt coz I’m on Ural). The after birth pains are horrid this time round and really that and my sore hips is the only pain I have now, less then 48hrs later. WOOHOO. I feel so great. I was up showering after the birth and ready to go lol. Baby is feeding great, at first he was slipping to the nipple heaps but I think coz they don’t suction out the baby when you give birth anymore- that the mucus wasn’t making him feel like feeding. But he is doing great now actually all he wants to do is nurse. I went home 24 hours later my choice because I just feel awesome compared to last time and so here I am.
Overall I don’t think It could have gone much better. It was the best experience. And now I know too ask for a fluid load sooner in labour so my labour progresses faster instead of stalling heaps.
Here are some pictures enjoy.
