Phenylalanine the controversy, what is your opinion?

Phenylalanine is contained in every piece of gum and mint that I enjoy! My ob/gyn says to stop using products, including the gum, that contain Phenylalanine! I do not have PKU, but I do have anxiety. My ob/gyn is the best in my city! I feel tormented because I can't chew my favorite gum. I know I should take every word she speaks to heart, but this is the hardest thing for me to give up!! What have you been told about Phenylalanine and how can effect the baby?? Yes i am addicted to chewing gum.. ha and I will bring this up with my ob/gyn but she is always so busy I think it can wait till my next appt...

I have heard that the evidence is inconclusive, but I choose to stay away from anything containing aspartame just to be safe.  If I want a soda I will just drink a regular one.  Sure there's tons of sugar in it, but at least I know that there's no harm to the baby.

If you love mints, switch to altoids, 100% sugar, baby!! Gum? My personal favorite is called "spry" and is like available at your local healthfood/supplement store, or online. It's sweetened with xylitol, which is a completely natural calorie free sweetener made from either corn or birch! (Ask your dentist about xylitol, I'll bet he's heard of it!) I love it, and will NEVER use anything with aspartame again!! (I'll also be keeping it out of the hands of all my children, as it's CONCLUSIVELY been linked to neurological side effects, including but not limited to ADD/ADHD/memory loss/nerve diseases/etc.) I reccommend the book: "Excitotoxins - The taste that kills" It sounds scary, but really it just breaks down all the disturbing chemical flavoring agents we use in foods, that can have an adverse affect on your health. Good luck, sorry about having to give up all your favorite things!

I drink about 2 diet sodas a day. I'm a diabetic. This is my only way to drink soda, but I will ask my Doc when I see him next about this sugar substitute. I don't know what else to do. I was drinking like 5-6 Regular pepsi a day before I found out I was pregnant and a Diabetic Any advice you can give me let me know. Thanks
