    Ricki Lake on "The Doctors"

Hey ladies. I don't know how many of you ever watch "The Doctors" show on NBC in the afternoons or so. They are debating a lot of very hot issues lately.  Yesterday, they had Jenny McCarthy on about autism which got REALLY heated at one point.  They are having Ricki Lake on the show on Monday, now. I'm sure things will get really heated with c-section supporter Dr. Lisa Masterson. This physician, on the show, at one explained to a first-time expectant mom the pros and cons of section v vaginal delivery (like it should even be an issue with a first timer, right?). The doctor made it sound as if sections and vaginal deliveries were in the same category, citing "brutal 4th degree tearing" that takes weeks and weeks to heal. Of course, the guest decided, after that visual, to have an elective cesarean for her first-time birth.

Anyways, I love to see educated debate about birth options, so I'm all over this.  I figured some of you might be as well.  The only drawback is that it is prerecorded, edited debating...it would be much better live.

So it comes on this coming Monday the 11th? I'll try to watch it but it will probably just make me mad.

I've never watched this show before; but it sounds exciting.  I can't stand how some drs are so pushy to slice and dice; its not the way birth was meant to be!  Only in extreme live-saving cases should a baby be taken from a woman's body.  If you aren't brave enough to push out the life you made, I fear you won't be a brave parent for your child; if you are capable of doing it, it shouldn't be an option for you to have a c-section!

What gets me is that she puts a vaginal delivery and a c-sec in the same category. That is not the same at all. A vagina is made for birthing babies. It stretches. If the patient and pushing stage is handled correctly (which most aren't in a hospital setting) the damage should be very minimal if any at all. And her argument that a 4th degree tear takes weeks to heal is pitiful. Like a cut in the abdomen doesn't take that long or longer?

I'm with you.  I saw a preview of the show a few days ago with Dr. actually suggesting that Ricki did not care for the welfare of her baby when she delivered it at home. I could offer a crazy argument to THAT one...given how safe elective abdominal surgery is compared to a normal vaginal delivery, and all.  Hell, the vast majority of the complications from a normal, well-managed labor and delivery (to both mom AND baby) are foreseeable by testing and/or ultrasound and/or can be dealt with at home or transported to a hospital. I had cardiac complications after the birth of my second baby in a hospital. I was complaining of chest pain for a half-hour, with low oxygen levels and, not once, did someone think to put the oxygen mask on me. It took an hour to get even an EKG tech to me.  By that time, my heart had already stopped once. After the EKG, I finally got to see a cardiologist. I fail to see how that kind of care is better than a nurse tending to JUST me, ready to administer oxygen, pitocin, transfer me or call 911 at any sign of distress.

So, I expect to be highly ticked off at least once during the show.  And will probably go berzerk on the complaints page for their website. But, I also like to hear both sides. If not for more information, then just to reinforce how I feel about midwife tending, drug-free labor, and homebirthing.

True True. That's reason enough to watch it. Like I said, I'll try to remember to wath it but I'm sure it will just make me mad. BTW, I noticed that Discovery or DiscoveryHealth is having a show on this week (monday or Tuesday I think) about Freebirthing. I'm curious to watch that too.
