    questions about safety...

I've never had a water birth, my DH is scared to death based on what our first childbirth class told us, 3 years ago. She said that the hospital didn't allow it because there had been some bloodwork done to show that babies born underwater had levels similar to a drowning victim, while a baby not born underwater did not.  I have NOT been able to find anything and even ACOG(I think) says that the main risk of a water birth is infection.  I would like to attempt laboring in the tub this time around, in a hospital if they have it, but I want some concrete proof to show my husband that it's okay.  If I end up delivering in the tub, which I kinda hope if it's as relaxing as they say, then I don't want him to growl at me and be upset because of his worries. I'd like to ease those worries before we ever get to that point so that he's not nagging me to get out of the tub.

Your midwife will be well trained in waterbirth and will be able to answer all DH's questions. Being born into water is not a problem. He/she has been in water all along so is quite natuaral to them. Only when the baby comes into contact with air will they have the urge to breath. The mdwf will coach you and the baby through the process - if needed. Even if baby does gulp a bit of water the mdwf is ready with suction equipment.

my midwife isn't a homebirth midwife, since I'm having a hospital birth. I do not know if he will trust her judgement in this case or not.  I was wanting some actual research to show him...

You could check out this website waterbirth.org , Its a great site. It helped ease my dh's worries and concerns. I had a hospital birth with my first one and also an epidural, i was very unhappy with my entire birth. My second was a home birth with a CPM and I labored in water and then got out during my pushing stage by choice. I loved the home birth. It was wonderful! THe water really does work with easing the labor and relaxing you during the toughest parts of labor..

That's true, it IS a great site!!! You should tell your husband, that as long as the unbilical cord hasn't been cut, and the placenta hasn't separated, your baby is still getting their blood ox levels from you, so unless YOU are drowning, your baby should never have levels like a drowning victim. That is absurd! It's terrible that anyone trained in childbirth would ever suggest that to a pregnant mother!! Be empowered by being able to educate yourself on the REAL risks, not nonsense made up by a medical community that frowns on self-empowered women. Your birth doesn't have to be a "medical procedure." Especially if you're low risk, and have delivered vaginally before. This country has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the developed world, not because of water births, or home births, or midwife assisted births, but because of extreme and usually unnecessary medical intervention, in hospitals, by doctors. I wonder if your husband is aware of that. Don't get me wrong, I had to have a c-section with my son, but I okayed it, when the time came, and I made sure my doc was well aware of my birth plan, and what was and wasn't okay with me, before hand. Doctors seem to have a way of not caring about the imput of a woman in labor, they think we're just hysterical, and our judgement is impaired by childbirth. Don't be bullied, your best birth is the one you choose for yourself, with education and a calm demeanor on your side. Good luck, and I hope you get your perfect water birth!!!

    Re: questions about safety...

Thanks everyone! I had done some homework on waterbirths and decided that her claim was crap, done to scare pregnant moms into not looking into their options. A "reason" per se, why the hospital didn't spend money on the tubs.  I "think" that the hospital I'll be delivering in this time does have the tubs, which will be awesome. I'll be hiring a doula and going over my birth plan with my midwife and my doula. Even if the midwife doesn't care for certain parts of my birthplan, I'll still go through with what I want to do!

My birth history...I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks in June of 2005, I had a c-section at 39 weeks in May 2006(breech), I had a vaginal birth in June 2007(13 months after my c-section), currently pregnant with an EDD of 12/18/09.  With all of the pregnancies, I had different OB's and different hospitals with, and I LOVED my last doctor. I'm with a new OB/midwife now because I've moved and I'm hoping that I can get the birth that I want with this one.
