Bedrest Buddies: What kind of baby products are you going with?

Hi everyone, although I have not been out the house to shop yet...too young right now 30 wks...I have been spending a lot of time exploring items on line. I have read numerous reviews and sometimes get confused as to what I really need. So far I need a travel system...I found that Chicco has systems that have been rated as best for hild safety this year so far. I also need a playard. We live in a 2 story and travel a lot so I need this. Again Chicco has a very good playard. Finally, a crib. Are you guys getting a convertible crib or standard. Are the convertible cribs sturdy enough for a toddler to grow up in? I saw a few...Da Vinci and I can't remember the other. I guess everthing else I need are diapers, wipes, blankets, hygiene care products, onesies etc. I probably want be able to out until 3 weeks or so. Maybe if evrything stays stable I can go in a wheelchair. You guys a further along than I am and I am pretty sure thatb you have gotten that chance to run out to the stores. I am getting restless staying in the house all day I guess because I have been doing it for 11 weeks. The only thing that is keeping me from getting bored is looking at baby stuff on the internet. I want buy anything until I see it, touch it, and play with it. But that will be in the weeks to come. Take care. I hope that you have enjoyed shopping for your little one. Carmen

Hi Carmen,  sounds like you have some good things picked out so far!  I have heard Chicco is a good brand too.  Being a first time mom myself, I wasn't really sure what I really needed either.  I didn't want to get things or put things on my registery just becasue it was on the 'Babies R Us' checklist.  I asked some of my girlfriends who have children and they suggested the following:  bassinett/play yard, travel system, changing table or pad for the top of a dresser, bouncy chair, a safety kit that includes a digital thermometer and a suction thingy for their noses, receiving blankets, bathing tub, excersaucer, boppy, front baby carrier, digital monitor (my friends love this), play gym/tummy time mat.  The hospital sends you home with lots of stuff too to get you started but I also bought some diapers, wipes, nusring pads etc as well.  I am planning to breastfeed so I only bought a few bottles in case it doesn't work out.  I did get a convertible crib which I bought second hand from my friend and plan to use that when the baby gets big enough through toddler.  I plan to use a bassinett at first. Our baby will be the eleventh grandchild in my husbands side of the family and they have a bassinett that has been used by many of the grandchildren.  My SIL is refinishing it.  I am so exicited to see it and it is very special.  There are a few things they said not to bother with such as a wipe warmer and bottle warmer but I guess that all depends on your preference. A rocking/glider type of chair was recommended but I plan to pick something up at like Ikea as I can't see spending like $700 on something like that.  I understand how you are getting restless.  I can TOTALLY relate. The weeks will continue to pass and I swear they go by quicker and quicker.  30 wks is awesome!  I remember in earlier posts when we could not wait until 28 weeks...and here we are yahoo!!!  How exciting to be talking about getting thigns ready for our little ones.  I 34w 4d and getting a little braver with my activity but still cautious.  Tomorrow I am getting my hair cut and highlighted which I cannot wait to do and on Wed. I am going into my office as they are having a shower.  Very sweet.  I am a little nervious as I have not seen many of my co-workers in over 3 months!  Ok, a bit off the subject but I am rambling...ok happy shopping and I hope your restlessness passes for today :).  Ruth Ann

Well, it seems like I am on the right track. I don't really have a nursery. We moved into a new house back in Dec and the 4th bedrm is my husband's office and I left the other 2 for guest since they both have new furniture in it. So the baby will be nesting in our room which has a small space off the main bedrm. So no big nursery this time. Therefore, I probably will only have room for a crib and changing table. You are right I did not go crazy with the putting everything under the sun on the registry. I figured at the end of the day people are going to get what they want! Oh I cannot wait to get my hair done again! I envy you! Have fun at your shower. I told my job to hold off on a shower for now. I obviously want to get further along...which I will! Take care. Have a fun week. And thanks for the good info. Carmen

I think you got some wonderful answers in that post! I would add a swing that goes forward and back and side to side. My kids HATE forward and back, so that may be a good idea. Also I'm getting a mosby wrap, to wear the baby. They are wonderful! Stock up on diapers if you can, all sizes. I normally get a ton of ones and twos and just a few newborns. And I'm supposed to be getting my hair highlighted tomorrow too if I can get a hold of the chick that's supposed to do it. Doesn't it just make you feel more "human"? LOL. Gotta love it! And with the baby stuff I just get used but make sure it is newer or not recalled. I refuse to buy anything full price it's too expensive.

THanks Angela. Yeah it seems like I am on the right track...which is good. I am trying to figure out whether I want a swing or bouncer. I think the bouncer may be more helpful for me since we travel a lot. But I really don't know right now. I am going to hold and spoil him/her for the first couple of weeks anyways! This will be my first baby and I want him/her to know what I had to do to keep them in! But at the end I probably want even remember bedrest. I am glad that you are getting your hair done. I can't wait for the day when I can get out again to have mines done. Yes baby stuff is expensive too. Everything is will more likely be new. Although my husband is the budgeter in the home and keeps a tight ship on the money, he is not a huge fan of used stuff. I told him after the second child his mind will change! Take care and I hope you week goes well. Carmen

Re: Bedrest Buddies: What kind of baby products are you going with?

Hi Ladies......I know i had my little one and all but i will still check in on the bedrest post because he is still in the NICU getting big and learning how to do things outside of the womb and i am home recovering from labor with no little one. I was looking into Graco......does anyone know anything about that vendor......they seem to get good safety reviews. This is my first and i too don't know what are the best vendors to go with.....the best reasonable vendors anyway. What are the best pampers too as well? Is anyone nervous about bringing their little one home......I think i get my nerves because he was born so premature and i don't want nothing to go wrong with him outside of the NICU.....they are doing a good job with him.....I get a little sensitive at times because i know i couldn't keep him in but i know now that the nurses know what they are doing and are taking great care of him. When i hold him at the hospital and he cries, I get so nervous......is that normal. I want to spend time holding him but think i am doing something wrong that is why he cries.....a little cry that got loud one day.....i was like wow didn't think babies his size got that loud. Is anyone doing a nursery.....if so are you painting and what is a good paint to go with. Good Luck ladies.....the time is almost near......Are any of you being induced for labor around 36 weeks or are you guys riding the whole 40 weeks out.

Re: Bedrest Buddies: What kind of baby products are you going with?

I love graco for the first car seats! It's great and it it isn't too much weight to carry with a baby for a little while. I also am a pampers mom with newborns. I think they hold in breastfeed baby poop better than huggies. (pampers swaddler) But I am very biased on that one. I don't like to use anything else for the first few months. I'm sorry you are having a hard time with your baby being in the NICU still. I thought you had said they were going to send him home soon! I hope everything is okay and he's still doing good. I'm not being induced. But they are fine with me going in the next 3 weeks(36 weeks) or after of course! I'm shooting for 37 weeks though. I want to make sure the GBS is done and that I'm in the clear. Plus she's already 5 lbs at 33 weeks! Big baby here. Good luck with getting your baby home and I hope you get less nervous about holding him too. I'd be really nervous with a tiny baby as well! Mine have been on the bigger side before so I'd be scared. I think what you are feeling is totally normal and to be expected! Try not to worry.

Thanks Angela.....that information is good to know. No my baby will be in the NICU for a while......I was placed on bed rest at 23 weeks, home first then hospital. I went into labor at 25 weeks. He is only 29 weeks gestational as of today. He will be there until July/August.......I was scheduled to deliver in August so you can imagine what i go through. He is big for his age i guess....his last weight was 2lbs 12oz and he is 14.9 inches long.

Sorry about that! I must have confused you with someone who had their baby at 30 weeks. Sorry! I'm glad he's doing well though. And yes I would be VERY scared holding someone so small! OH my goodness. I'm glad he's doing so well for you.

Re: Bedrest Buddies: What kind of baby products are you going with?

Diyya I am glad little Kaleb os doing well. I am pretty sure it is hard to go home and not have hime there with you. Believe me those thoughts run through my mind all the time. But what we have to understand is that we did all we could...bedrest, meds and all. Just take it day by day and ask alot of questions. And that cry...that is good...embrace it...that means he is doing really well...those lungs are getting stronger. I am also unfamiliar about baby products. This is my first. We either have to learn from other mothers or let it come to us naturally. Graco is a very popular brand and has been around for a long time. Everyone has their preferences. Just try it out...play with it or so. Make sure it fits in the car/trunk...not too heavy...too bulky...read reviews-you will find one that you like. But I think Graco is a great brand to use. I have just been reading reviews and stuff, haven't done any shopping obviously...thanks to BEDREST. But I want complain. ARe you breastfeeding? If so how does that work with the bayy being in the NICU. Target has a Medulla brand on sale thise week for 249.00 regular is 279.00. I am thinking about saving $30, that could go towards something else...thiings add up with these babies...you can easily go broke. Carmen

Re: Bedrest Buddies: What kind of baby products are you going with?

Hi Carmen.....I am pumping right now to feed the baby.....they feed the milk straight to his stomach and he is tolerating it. I went out and purchased the Medela single deluxe pump and the nurses laid me out because they said it was the wrong pump for me to use......I rented the Medela Symphony pump from the hospital for 75.00 a month. I put the Medela pump that was 279.00 on my gift registry hoping one of my friends or relatives would be nice enough to purchase for me.....I should send out hints that it is on sale right now for 249.00.....that is a good deal. I really don't want to do any more shopping until after my shower which my girlfriends won't tell me the date to. I have to use the Symphony pump right now because they say that is the only one you should use for premature babies. I honestly don't see the difference.....milk is milk right. I get more milk when i use my single pump than when i use the Symphony pump. I asked about using the Medela pump that retails for 279.00 and they told me no not to use that one right now. Do any of you ladies who aren't first time moms know anything about these breast pumps? Carmen are you having a baby shower? Babies R Us will give you 10% off any items that were not purchased on your gift registry.....hey another way to save some money. I will chat with you later......hang in there with bed rest.....It is almost over......6-10 weeks left.....I can't wait to hear you guys delivery stories and see pics of your little ones. Diyya

Re: Bedrest Buddies: What kind of baby products are you going with?

Diyya- You lost me on the pump thing! I thought milk was milk too and that the pump was based on the mother's preference and comfort. I hope someone gets you that Medela pump. I have heard that it is good. I would like to get mines now so that I can read up on the instructions and practice...that way I want be overwhelmed or shocked when the baby comes. I am going to go on line and look to see if there is any lactation information. I don't know anything about breastfeeding. You would think so since I am a nurse. I totally played through my mother/baby rotation when I was in nursing school. I hated it...I did not like that rotation. Now I wish I would have taken it more seriously. I am not sure if I will have a shower people have asked me, but its a week by week thing. I am scared to plan a shower and have people travel and tale off then something happens...I am very optimistic though! So if anything, we will have something afterwards. Also, I think we will travel back homeand have a shower there. Yes 6 more weeks to go...cannot wait...getting restless. But is all worth it. They say when the baby is born you forget everything else! Send us some pictures. Carmen

Wow, you guys provided some great additional info, thanks!  Diyya - so glad to hear your little one is getting stronger and stronger.  I am sure it is very scary holding him and hearing him cry but like Carmen said, crying is a good thing...unless it keeps you up all night...lol.  I may have told you this before but my girlfriend had a baby at 26 weeks.  He spent 3 months in the NICU and is now a thriving 3 year old.  It is absolutely amazing how they progress!

Now that I have my little guy home I can tell you I have alot of stuff and the thing I use the most is a Soothing Motion Glider from Fisher Price he is my thrid and It is GREAT!! it glides, viberates, sings and he can lay down or sit up. He sleeps in it because I can see him while were sleeping and the bassinet is alittle high when I'm laying down It is well worth the money you will spend on it TRUST ME!! OH and its easy to take apart and wash! (at babies R us)
