Ok, I am scarred now. My Dr. expressed some concern that I may need to have the my cervix stitched because of incompetent cervix. I have been reading about this procedure and the more info I get the more aprehensive I am begining to get. Has anyone out there had this procedure done? Does it hurt, did you bleed, where you restricted from "whoopie", did you have to go on bed rest? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Should I get a second opinion? I need some advise guys. Please help me.

    Re: cervical cerclage

Hello, my name is Carmen. I have a cerclage which was placed at 14 weeks and I am now 34 weeks. I have IC and lost my first pregnancy at 18 weeks. I have prematurely dilated 3 cm and my bag of membranes were pretty much in my vagina...sorry. They did an emergency cerclage and eventually my bag of membranes broke during the procedure and i delivered 1 week later. It is a higher risk the further along you get. Although many do really well with an emergency cerclage. This time I got it prophylactically at 14 week. They do it early before your cervix begans to open or shorten. The procedure doesn't hurt. it was an outpatient procedure and they gave me an epidural and not general. For the first few days I had some light cramping and spotting, but that went away completely. I will tell you that I ended up on bedrest at 19 weeks until now...15 weeks. My cervix began to shorten significantly at 19 weeks and bedrest was the only intervention. This was modified to strict bedrest...going nowhere but to the doctor,no stairs, sick baths, and obviously no sex. Even now I am out in a wheelchair. The stitch and God's divine intervention was the only thing keeping me from havimg this baby! So, I am for cerclages. Everyone is different. Some go full term some go preterm with the cerclages...some even go without the cerclage. I lost my first and knew that I did not want to go through that again so i got the cerclage. I didn't get a second opinion either, but thats your choice. Mabe you can see a peri doc or high rsik doctor.they can give you more insight. I had text book IC and they knew I wold need a cerclage. Some people just have a short cervix and do fine the entire pregnancy with just bedrest. Either way when you have IC connected to you it is definitely a serious condition to think about. Carmen

    Re: cervical cerclage

Hi Tina, I just read your post about Cerclages and wanted to share my story and experiences.. 2004 i found out i was preg and thought everything was fine. Wasn't till i was about 12 weeks along that i discovered somethnig was really wrong. At the time i had crappy insur and wasnt getting the best care for my baby. I went to ER and was told i was already 5 cm dialated. I was in and out for a few more weeks and then out on bedrest.. Now nowhere in that time frame of 1 month where it was most crucial was i told about cerclages. I dont know if it would have changed anything now but any help could have been better. at 21 weeks i went into full labor. I gave birth but my son had died. now i tell you i am preg again and i am scared to death also. I was told and thankful i was about cerclages. My OB said in about 5 weeks they might do one, Oh im 5 weeks right now aug 28th 09 and am doing everything i can to ensure that this baby survives in my womb. Oh I also have an incompetent and short cervix Im about 2 cm's, however its measured. So i know how scaed you must be. I too am scared. Please update me on your progress. thanks and Good Luck Alison

    Re: cervical cerclage

I am completely in favor of the cerclage! I lost two babies, one at 21 weeks and the other at 24 wks (she was admitted to NICU and surivived for 3 months) because of my IC. I did not have a cerclage with these two pregnancies. I had my cerclage done at 14 weeks with my son (who is now 2 1/2!) and everything went perfectly! No early dilation, no shortening of the cervix, they monitored me by ultrasound every week to make sure my cervix was nice and long... along with the cerclage (in my case at least) they also prescribed bed rest (but not complete bedrest) and yeah, the bummer... no intercourse. I spotted briefly after they put the cerclage in, but nothing to be concerned about - the procedure is pretty quick, it's an outpatient procedure... I had a spinal with mine and then stayed in recovery where they took my vitals and listened to baby while we waited for the spinal to wear off. I am currently 12 wks with a new pregnancy and am looking forward to the rest of this pregnancy and because of the miracle of my son (full term and healthy!) I have a sense of calm and reassurance with this pregnancy that I did not have with him. If you have a vaginal delivery... they take out the cerclage around 34 wks... mine stay in because I will have a scheduled c-section with this baby... they then take the stitches out at my 6 wk check up which is the most uncomfortable part of the entire process. Best of luck to you in your decision!
