    Does breast surgery affect breastfeeding?

I had breast reduction a couple of years ago. At that time we thought I would be unable to have a baby. Surprise! I'm due to have a baby boy this month. Problem is, I'm not sure if things were left "hooked up." I have not had ANY sign of milk or leakage whatsoever and am 37 weeks along. Is that common or is it a sign that I won't be able to breastfeed?

Congratulations Juhl - you are almost there. I had a breast reduction many years ago and my milk never came in. I had the colostrom (sugary substance after you give birth), however, no milk came after the colostrom. Here is the good news - my breasts stayed the same! I didn't get significantly bigger while pregnant and after I had my daughter, they were sore for a few days and then went back to normal. I have friends that stretched out and now sag.... for some reason that didn't happen to me. So there is a plus to it. My daugther is 4 now and a formula baby who is very bright, active, etc.. I am preg. with #2 and will bottle feed as well. I was upset that I couldn't breast feed, but it does all work out in the end. Best of luck to you!

It is common to not have any signs of milk while you are pregnant. The milk will not come in till after the baby is born, and most women do not get the colostrum till after the baby is born either. I had no leakage with any of my 4 kids. I think they are better with their techniques these days and chances are you will be able to breastfeed.
