    Pregnancy Weight Gain

This is my second child after 14 years. I am so excited and scared at the same time. My concern is that I have gained 27 pounds and I just turned 28 weeks as of Wednesday, July 9, 2008. I almost feel as if this is a mistake, but I gues not. I was looking through some papers and it looks like I weighed in at 185lbs when it was confirmed that I was pregnant on January 16, 2008. I was already overweight, so now I am really scared. What should I do? So far my doctor hasn't expressed concern, but I sure am.

    Re: Pregnancy Weight Gain

Did you start out at a healthy weight?  If so, you probably won't get much criticism from your doctor.  I don't agree 100% with the 25-35 lb. range they give mothers.  In my last 2 pregnancies I gained at least 40 lb. and didn't have any problems whatsoever.  I think it depends on the mom's overall health, pre-pregnancy weight, and diet more than the actual amount she's gained during her pregnancy.  My advice would be to keep a log of what you eat until your next visit, this way if your doctor comments on your weight gain you have something to show for it.  It can also help keep you in check if you think you're eating the wrong stuff.  Normally if you eat well 90% of the time, you can afford to slack off the other 10%.
