    Visual Disturbances-35 wks

I am nearly 36 weeks pregnant, 2nd pregnancy and have experienced three separate times now an "episode" of visual disturbances. It happened the first time a couple months ago when I was overexherting -- went to hospital, everything checked out fine. Now it is happening to me again, two days in a row and nobody seems to know what is causing them. I do have low blood sugar and seem to overheat when it happens which they seem to think is the cause. This is like nothing I have ever experienced before - it looks like rainbow prisms of light that cluster and move, more in my left eye. My BP is normal, everything checks out normal. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before? Can blood sugar really cause these issues? Can overheating cause these? I am scared and hoping this all goes away with delivery. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should contact your care provider whenever you have an episode, and it sounds like you have.  But you need to be checked to make sure it isn't something serious.

That being said, there is a large increase in blood volume while you are pregnant.  Your eyes are very pressure sensitive, and the increase in blood volume can cause changes in the pressure of your eyes, thus changes in vision.  This is why they won't do corrective eye surgery when you are pregnant.  Maybe this in a combination of overexertion/overheating and blood sugar is causing your episodes?  You really need to keep in close contact with your care provider to make sure it's nothing serious...

    Good luck to you!
