    second pregnancy diastasis

With my first pregnancy (my son is now 2 and change) I had hideously agonizing diastasis. I am 5' 0" and 115lb, gained just under 35 pounds. I have a very short torso, so I think this is the issue. I'm not in great shape, but decent - I do aerobic excercise 3-5 x/wk. (same with first pregnancy) My ob didn't really give me much info - but I had a planned cs because of it with internal stiches for repair of the muscles. I still don't feel right, and am 5 weeks pregnant. My question is - how can I avoid the problem this time around????? (it was really, really bad!) Thanks! Jamie

    Re: second pregnancy diastasis

I am a doula, so this is out of the range of my knowledge/expertise, but wanted to respond.

Generally, physical discomforts/issues that you had during your first pregnancy will happen again with subsequent pregnancies.  I, for instance, am prone to bad ligament pain and varicose veins.  Between pregnancies (I have three children) they lessen significantly if not go away completely.  I would suspect that diastasis would fall into this category...especially since pregnancy itself will directly cause stretching of these muscles.  I sincerely hope this doesn't happen again...hopefully the surgery will have helped things permanently.  I can't imagine how painful your recovery must have been after a c-section with extra internal repair.  Talk to your care provider about it and see if they can offer you any suggestions to help minimize the chances of this happening again.

    Good luck!
