Should I buy a manual or electric breast pump

I plan on staying home with the baby for at least 8 months so I won't be pumping very often. I do want my husband and daugther to feed the baby maybe twice a day to give them some bonding time together. Do you think I need a electric pump or will a manual one be enough for 2 pumps a day. I was thinking of getting this manual pump, anyone used this one before? http://www.amazon.com/Medela-67186-Harmony-Manual-Breastpump/dp/B0006HBS1M/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3AB618RESTRI&colid=2DJTLD1GHXDTN

Re: Should I buy a manual or electric breast pump

I rented an electric one from the hospital before I left, one of the Medela top grade ones, and I hated it! I couldn't get anything from it, and it really was a waste of my money. (Especially since I wasn't planning on pumping alot.)

I went to Target and bought the Avent Manual Pump, and I LOVED it! I was able to pump alot more, in a lot quicker time!

I think that it veries with everyone, and alot of times what works for one person doesn't for the other, but I did love my manual! And the electrics are expensive if you aren't planning to use it often.

i think you will get tired of the manual one really fast, it hurts your hand like if you used scissors on cardboard for a long time

I really like my electric pump. However, because DD was in the NICU and I was at home, I did a lot of pumping. If you're only going to do it about twice a day, the manual pump may not be too bad.

It really depends on how much you'll be pumping.  If you aren't pumping much a manual will get the job done.  On the other hand, in my experience, an electric pump is best for pumping often.  So much easier and much faster!

Whatever kind you go with, I recommend not getting the cheapest.  Mid-range has worked for me for both electric and manual.  Pumps are definitely something that you get what you pay for.  (If you plan on pumping every day, I'd go for an electric.)

I guess it is very true that preferences vary with each person! I had to laugh at this post because I had an Avent Manual Pump that I borrowed from my SIL, and I hated it!! I couldn't get hardly anything with it and my hand got exhausted trying... so I rented a top grade Medela Electric Pump from a local pharmacy and LOVED it! I ended up keeping it for three months and used it every day. It was so nice because it was fast and it filled those little bottles right up. I also prefer the electric pump because I very often had a quick nap while it was pumping for me - that was a huge bonus. It was big and kind of a pain to haul around, but I still took it everywhere with me. My SIL ended up buying one, and has lended it to me for this next baby.

Avent electric Pump, and I LOVED it

I didn't pump often but it was a life saver if DS was sick and not feeding - and i got engorged.  Plus if DS was sick it was easier for him to feed from bottle than me.  Worth every cent

I would go with the electric brest pump. You get what you pay for when it comes to breast pumps. With my son, I bought 3 cheep manual pumps and they all lasted only a few times! You can't return used breast pumps either! So, we broke down and bought $150.00 pump--- it is a Lansanoh Nuture 3. You can get it at Target. Go to baileymed.com for more information on it. I Love it. Medela is also a great pump. I have a friend that loves it and has used it for multiple children. My Lansanoh is still in great shape and I'll be using it with this child too.

Re: Should I buy a manual or electric breast pump

Do ya'll know anything about the Playtex pumps? I too am in the process of looking for a pump but not sure what route to go either. I don't want to fork over alot of money due to the fact that I wasn't able to breastfeed DD #1 but definately want an automatic pump. I LOVED the playtex bottles so I thought to myself, "Why not a Playtex pump?" Not sure though. So far all the bottles we've gotten are playtex too so I need something that I can use with them. Any ideas or does it matter on the bottles?

It doesn't matter on the bottles. I used a Medela electric pump, but fed with the Avent bottles (will be switching though because of BPA). I would just pump into the Medela bottles, then empty them into the Avent bottles that I would feed with and store any excess in.
