inverted nipples..any else have this problem and a solution?

With my last baby, I had one nipple that was inverted and now with this pregnancy, I see it is back. I tried last time to breast feed at the hospital but the day nurses wouldn't help me get my daughter to latch on. Then she needed the billirubin lights so that meant formula. I pumped when I got home for her and continued to do so for a few months. I don't want this one to be this way. Any suggestions? Melanie

Hi, I’m from March board. Both my boobs have flat nipples, I had a hard time adjusting to feeding with my first little one but with the help of a lactation specialists we were able to get it all sorted out. I had no troubles with my second. Most hospitals have a Lactation specialist on staff, I strongly suggest that before you listen to any doctor or nurse regarding feeding that you consult with the specialist. I also listed some sites for you to read. I have Dr. Jack Newman’s Book and it was so helpful with my successful experience with my daughter, I really admire him as most book seller don’t offer their info for free online but he does.

You can also try going to some La Leche League meetings before the baby arrives to line up some support.  Also, you can buy a cheap manual pump and pump a couple of times to draw out the nipple to help baby latch.

I'm from the March board also but thought I would reply because I had inverted nipples with  my first also. They gave me these cups to wear for the a few weeks before I had the baby. They made my nipples stick right out and I'm sure I'm not going to have a problem this time. The things they gave me were like hard plastic cups with a little hole that makes the nipple stick out. I would definately try to get a specialist in the hospital. It would probably be really helpful and they do anything they can to try to get you going.

While I'm not pregnant I have 1 inverted nipple. While I'm pregnant it is normal, but literally as soon as I give birth it goes inverted again. There are breast shields I've heard you can use. Also to get it to come out I pump for a few seconds before it's time to latch on. I will probably being doing that again this time around. Best of luck.
