Hey all - I was just wondering what your thoughts are on all the tests they recommend for us over 35? I'm approx. 10 weeks along with our first and we've read through some of the literature but a part of us is SOOOO excited to even be pregnant at this stage that no matter what the test results, we wouldn't terminate the pregnancy or anything. I can see where some advance notice of certain issues could be helpful - but do you feel it's worth the risk? I guess most of the tests have very little risks, though, right? Just looking for your thoughts - I'm sure its a very personal decision. And I'm unsure of what types of issues they can determine that could be treated in any way or need advance notice so they (the doctors) can be prepared at birth...can't we determine if the baby's ok with ultrasounds, etc.?

Hi Valerie- I'm no pro at this as it's my first time around also, but I was in the same boat. I'm a little over 14 weeks now, but I can tell you that I wanted to go as far as I could with a non-invasive testing route. I just had my 12 week ultrasound about 2 weeks ago and had the first trimester screening (also called Nuchal Translucency Screening or Nuchal Fold Scan). It is painless and involves no risk to you or your baby. The technician will conduct measurements during the u/s, and they will also take your blood (it's a finger *** test and you give 5 drops up). It's a combo test that they say has a 82-87% accuracy in detecting Downs and trisomies 13 and 18. Keep in mind that all of the non-invasive tests will only tell you if you are at high risk for an abnormality--there is no conclusive data. Since I tested within the "normal" range and there was no added risk once they figured in my "advanced age" of 38, we decided not to get the Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) or the amniocentesis. If I had tested at high risk, I may have considered one of these diagnostic tests. My advice would be to go as far as you can with the non-invasive testing and go from there! Hope this helps, lisa

Re: Who is out there over 35?

Hi all I'm Wendy 36 from London, England and mum to 3 boys and have just found out I'm about 5 weeks pregnant. I'm due around the 10th - 13th September. Not 100% sure which day, but will know after a scan, hopefully I don't have to wait too long for that. This is my 7th pregnancy, I have lost 4, all early before 10 weeks, one ectopic but was pushed out with a laparoscopy. I am very nervous for this one. I done 4 months of fertility treatment last year because i have PCOS and only ovulate 2 or 3 time a year. This treatment didn't produce a pregnancy but I did ovulate twice during the treatment. After a long talk with hubby we decided to forget about having another one. So I gave all my baby stuff away and got a puppy. Well just two months after that here I am LOL. I tried to get pregnant after my youngest turned one, that was four years ago. Tried, tried and tried and it didn't happen, I decide to give up on the idea and hay presto!! Typical. I'm feeling sick and tired and boobs are hurting a bit, so far so good. Looking forward to getting to know you all a bit more.

I can't go to the midwife yet, my insurance doesn't kick in until March first - I will be right around 12 weeks then. Looking forward to getting to know other moms in my age bracket Jennie

Re: Who is out there over 35?

HI There! - I am 38 and this is my fourth pregnancy! I have a 19,17, and 16 year old they are all very excited for the new baby!!!! I had the ultra sound and blood test done last week at my 13 week and the Dr said that everything looked awesome and that I did not have to do any other testing. This baby is an IVF baby and that is because I had my tubes tied after my third baby..... No matter what we were not going to terminate the pregnancy so I would have take the advise from the Dr and then just prepared for it...... I tried to find out the sex and the ultrasound tech said it was still a little to early to tell for sure but, she thinks its a BOY!!!!! I have 2 Girls now and a boy so that would be awesome to have another boy they are so much easyer to raise...... I do know that it is much harder on me this time around then when I was 19 and 20, my body feels like I am hit by a truck everyday!LOL!!! We were truley lucky and we only had to go through one cycle and got pregnant!!!! In a funny way I am enjoying this pregnancy much more that I am older then when I was younger. And the other thing is that I am showing alot faster then when i was younger. I am already in maternity pants and shirts and I am not due till July 21st. But, I have only gained 5 pounds....... I hope this helps and if there is anything else that I can help with let me know. GOOD LUCK

Hi, I just found this thread. I just turned 37 and I am 14 weeks pregnant with our first child. I had the 1st trimester screen which came back normal so I am not going to get amnio or CVS. It was really awesome to be able to see the baby on the 3D u/s. Better than waiting until the second trimester! I do get tired very easily but so far everything is going well. Is anyone out there getting any genetic screening for things like Cystic Fibrosis?

I am 37 and in my 3rd trimester!! Today marks the 28th week for me. One thing I have to say about being pregnant at this age compared to earlier is that time flies!! I am so busy with my other 2 boys that this pregnancy has gone by very quickly. The 1st trimester took a while but the 2nd was fast. I will be 38 by the time my baby is born and I love being this age and having another baby. It seems like a special gift. And I am sooooo much more mature to handle everything now too. But this week I have been very emotional and sensitive. My husband can look at me the wrong way and it makes me want to cry... and then I think I am going to put myself back on the market and start dating with my pregnant self! Very rational, I know!! I am so glad to see all of your posts on here!

Re: Who is out there over 35?

Hey Lady ... I'll be 39 when this one "boy" touches down. i have a 19 yr old daughter and a son that will be 5yrs old 1week after babies due date. sounds scary and fun to me ... i need some ladies in the same boat to share and talk with. I like myself being a prenant thirty something vs. a 20's mom because I feel more mature and knowledgable also Im not so sensitive to what other people have to say. Like those testy inlaws.and the comments about my body size. I am greatful to be blessed again so far all is good after all the perinatal testing of course. I am just happy and cant wait to hold my little bundle of busy-ness as i have learned with my 4yr old how energetic boys are.
