    My little man came

Hi Mommies I gave birth to baby Kaleb on 5/5/2009. I was 25 weeks and 1 day. My little guy is doing so well in the NICU at the hospital and the nurses are taking really good care of him. He came out weighing 1lb and 12oz and my doctor stated that most babies who are 27 weeks carry that weight so i was happy to hear that. He is so long 13 inches. He has been breathing on his own since his birth which is really good. He is a little fighter. I look forward to the day he graduates from the NICU and comes home.

good luck! my well wishes are with you. I'm at 25 weeks and one day today, and my biggest worry lately has been what would happen if he was born right now. reading your post gave me a really good feeling! it's so exciting that he's breathing on his own! what a little trooper! best of health to you and your tiny wonder!

    Re: My little man came

Congratulations! It sounds like your little man is one strong baby. I am thrilled to hear he is doing so well and breathing on his own. That is amazing. Like stated in pp, reading your news gives me so much encouragement. As you may recall, I too am on bedrest, 31w 1d and know that everything will be ok. Do you mind me asking if you got the steriod shots? Enjoy your little one and I will put you both in my prayers that his stay in the NICU is short. Congrats!

Congrats in little man! It is such a blessing to here about his stability and progress in the NICU. That is just great news to hear that he is doing well. Keep your head up...pray and enjoy every moment. I am 26 going into my 27th week and than God everyday for each milestone. May ask why was Kaleb born early? We all have different situations and it is always good to know what happens. Anyways keep in touch and I will be praying for you and the baby and for your strength. Carmen

    Re: My little man came

Thanks Carmen that means a lot. I am still trying to figure this incompetent cervix thing out myself. I can't really tell you why. I don't know if it was because i was already 2 cm dilated. I followed my bed rest orders. Everyone's body is different. I do know that i had surgery in the past and that could have affected things but dr's don't really give you a good excuse as to why it happens.....they make assumptions but do i think they truly no.....nah! I read people's stories everyday of why they were bed rested and there were some people who had dilated like myself and made it a lot further. I can honestly tell you this......I don't even remember the labor.....it happened so fast. I started having contractions at like 2 am Tue morning but they were really mild... around 7 i went to the restroom and saw blood, told the nurse....she called the doctor.......they prepped me for c-section.....doctor came.....wheeled me to the operating room......gave me an epidural.....water broke......performed c-section and took baby. I can honestly tell you that i am grateful to have been admitted to the hospital because they reacted very quickly. I got the steroid shots and let me tell you, i am so glad because he is doing really well with his breathing. I will keep you guys posted with his success.....they did his head sonogram last night so i am just waiting to hear the results. All i can tell you is this.....stay in the bed....try to minimize transvaginal sonograms. My cervix is tilted so the only way they could see it was to do one.....not to blame the sonograms but i will tell you this with my last pregnancy i got the sono and was in labor in 2 days.....with this one......i was fine in the hospital up until Monday when they did my sonogram but they had orders not to go up into it too far just on the tip of the vagina to see and i went into labor that night. I am going to do some research to see does that affect labor. I really would like to give Kaleb a little brother or sister in the future but I am so discouraged, especially the way my body has been reacting to pregnancies. Good Luck with your little one and i will definitely keep you in my prayers......stay in the bed......each day definitely marks a mile stone.

I lost my first baby to early miscarraige, my second baby was born at 35 weeks (after stopping labour at 32 weeks and having bed rest) - she is now 9 and healthy, my third baby was born at 23 weeks and died ten weeks after. I was then allowed to go to a preterm research centre in Victoria (Australia) and went under a myriad of testing during my fourth pregnancy. This research centre only allows women who have had three or more preterm and/ or miscarraiges, and has in the last ten years had a 99% success rate in getting these women's following pregnancies past 35 weeks. So I sought out this centre, and we moved almost 1,000 kms so that I could go. One of the tests was to have fortnightly internal ultrasounds (sonograms) for a more detailed check of my cervix. At 21 weeks with that pregnancy, they found my cervix had shortened from 3.9 to 1.7 cms. They said from research they have found a shortening of the cervix in that amount of time (was 9 days) meant my body would go into proper labour within a week and I would have lost that baby. So they put in a cervical stitch that afternoon. They have found in those circumstances that to put in a BURIED SCHIRODKAR cervical stitch has the best success rate. I had the stitch removed at 38 weeks being told that I would either go into immediate labour, or that my cervix would be so used to being closed that I may be overdue. I was really excited when I made it to fullterm and my family and I brought out the non-alcoholic wine to celebrate. At 40 weeks and 3 days I gave birth naturally to a healthy 8lb 12oz boy! The following pregnancy I had the cervical stitch put in at 12 weeks and had another overdue baby - a healthy girl at 40 weeks 5 days! 9lb! When I went in for that op at 12 weeks to have the stitch put in, I was visited by a man writing a research paper and he told me (in 'confidence' as they only had about 6 years of proof at that stage, and have wait until 10 years of proof before publishing their findings - that was 4 years ago, so hopefully will come out soon) that with every D&C (Dilatation and Curettage) that you have your chances of your cervix being weakened greatly increase. D&C's are performed with early abortions, miscarraiges, and in my case I had one during each of my 7 laparoscopies for Endometriosis. So I was told they are the main causes for cervical weakness. And there is an 80% tp 99% chance of making it to full term pregnancy AFTER a SCHIRODKAR suture has been put in. DO not go for the MCDonald suture, it only has about a 40% success rate. Ofcourse you also have to follow your doctors advice of no intercourse (orgasm is fine - just inserting anything near the suture can cause infection), no lifting, stretching, or deep coughing allowed. Sorry about the HUGE answer. I have been writing letters to all kinds of government officials etc here in Australia for the past 5 years trying to make this public knowledge immediately as the clinic had a 99% success rate over 6 years and it upsets me that so many women lose their babies when they don't have to. Unfortunately I just get passed onto another department etc. Anyway, I hope this helps some of you ladies! Kristy

    Re: My little man came

I am so glad that Kaleb and you are doing well. I prayed for you guys the other night when I found out that you had the baby. I will be 27 weeks this week and pray everyday that God gets me through another week. Maybe when guys consider getting pregnant again, you may consider an abdominal cerclage. I heard that works better if the transvaginal cerclage doesn't work. But i guess that is way down the road. When are you getting out of the hospital? How long are they expecting Kaleb to stay or is it too early to say? I am so glad that he is breathing on his own! Take care and keep in touch. Carmen

The transabdominal stitch is the best, but it stays in for life and means caesers every time . But there is alot less restrictions on what you can/ can't do. It depends on how many children you want to have (can't have too many caesers). Kristy

    Re: My little man came

Yeah my peri doctor told me that is something to consider for future pregnancies. I was like well why didn't you tell me before I got the cerclage this time , I might have researched it a little more. My first pregnancy the cerclage didn't fail, but my water was broken during the rescue cerclage procedure. So maybe they truly didn't know if the regular cerclage was going to work or not. I just hate that considering everything that I have gone through and going through with pregnancies. However, I will be 27 weeks this week and I want complain. I am almost 2 1/2 month further than I was the last time. I would like to have 1 or 2 more. So I will have to consider something. Carmen

    Re: My little man came

I will look into the abdominal cerclage.....i don't know too much about it. I have been released from the hospital already. I had him on Tuesday and they let me go home on Thursday. Recovery was rough from the c-section. I am still in some pain around my abdominal area. It is hard getting out of the bed. My ankles and feet have swelled up really bad and my right hand feels as if it is sleep all the time. I can not write, or use it like i normally do to do simple things like open bottles, or turn out lights. I know you have stated that you are in school or are a nurse. Have you heard anything about that? Is it normal for my ankles and feet to be as swollen as they are. I go to my doctors today to have the staples removed and I was going to ask some questions then. Thanks for praying. I got the results back from the head sonogram and they were good....YAY!!!!!! They took his insulin line off of him because they said his blood/sugar was looking really good. They started feeding him milliliters of food and he did well with it....he finally took a poop. They will probably keep him in the NICU until my due date which was 8/17/2009.....remember he is still growing and developing just outside of the wound now. The good thing is our NICU is open 22 hours out of the day so i can see him anytime. I took his temperature, changed a diaper, and gave him a binky the other day. I get nervous sometimes when i go in because he is so little.....a lot smaller than a regular newborn. It is amazing though to see what he looks like at 25 weeks and to know that i only had 15 more weeks to go and babies triple their weight that fast.....that's amazing to me. Well take care and good luck.

    Re: My little man came

I am so happy to see that Kaleb is doing well and that his head scan came out good. Another blessing! As far as swelling, it is common from a c-section or any type of sugery. It is a result of fluid shifts in the body. Eventually, it should resolve on its own. Just keep an eye out on it. Making sure that you don't develop any breathing problems or chest pain...that would be an immediate concern. Just let your OB doctor know if you have any questions though. i am glad to see you guys doing better. Carmen

    Re: My little man came

Congrats on him doing so well. He sounds like a strong boy! I get swollen like that anytime someone hooks me up to an IV. I does go away but it's annoying for a while. I"m so glad you seem to have such a great outlook on everything, and I hope these weeks fly by for you quickly and he comes home soon for you!
