    Pregnant with MS?

Hey there Im newly pregnant, due in April, and im having a lot of trouble with my MS symptoms and other symptoms. Such as major pain (legs, back, arms and headachs everyday) and sinus trouble, not to mention not sleeping more than two hours a night (which might be normal, but im not sure). It would be nice to have someone that has MS and has gone through this before or is going through it now. Thanx

Me! I'm due with twins in Feb and am having the worse MS episode ever. I've been off work for over a month now. My legs got so bad I could barely walk, I ended up taking a course of steroiuds because I was getting completely unable to function. Things are very slowly coming back. My first two pregnancies were before I was diagnosed and my third I had no MS symptoms the whole time. I'm sorry your having problems but would love to taljk to you. It's nice to have someone that can relate.

    Re: Pregnant with MS?

Yeah it is definatly nice to have someone to talk to that can relate!! If you dont mind me asking when were you diagnosed and how were your symptoms before pregnancy? Mine got pretty bad sometimes but managable with meds but when we decided to get pregnant, I decided to stop taking all my meds and stop smoking, the day I found out I was pregnant was the same day i had planned to quit all my meds and smoking which was about a week ago and now Im probably one month along and i have barly been able to get out of the house as well. It is absolutly frustrating I am just not used to it at all. They put me on Lortab for my headaches and antibiotics and benadryl for my sinuses but there is really nothing they can do for everything else. How far along were you when your symptoms started getting bad? Did you have trouble sleeping as well? I am really sorry that you are having trouble and that you have to be off work, I know how frustrating that can be. I hope to hear form you soon. Thanx again for replying it really is nice to talk to someone that can actually empathize with this!

    Re: Pregnant with MS?

Thank you and congrats to you as well!! I was diagnosed in Sept. 2004. For the most part I have problems with my legs, weakness and uncoordination. Sometimes weakness in my arms but not as often. Between episodes or flare ups I have very few symptoms, most people are shocked t0o hear it. I have some bladder issues that are always present but thats it. I take steroids to deal w/ episodes and Avonex on and off for maintanence. With the exception of the first year I usually only have about 1 episode a year. I was around 10 weeks when I started having problems this time and it is by far the most severe episode ever. I've had headaches this last week but it is more pregnancy/allergy related. I don't experience the pain you do and feel bad you have to deal with it when this should be a happy time! Do you take steroids for episodes? Do you have other kids? Tell mme about your MS experiences.

    Re: Pregnant with MS?

Thanx! I am very excited, this wil be our first child. I am 24 now and I was diagnosed two years ago. However on top of my MS I also have an immune deficiency, migranes and Degenerative Disc Desiease (the tissue "cushioning" on three of my spinal lunbars are eroded). With all of these together it is sometimes hard to tell which is causing the pain. But I do notice much more fatigue and muscle weakness when I am not taking my daily shot Copaxone. I have bladder issues too, it actually had started to lessen when i first became pregnant but now its back. Usually the pain is there but managable, but since I do not have any meds now it has become worse. I was never put on steriods, actually my family has had quite a bad experience with steriods. My sister also has immune defienciency disorder and lupos among many other things, but her doctors felt the best way to deal with it at the time was to fill her system with steriods, which led to her gaining about 90 lbs in the course of few months which just added more problems in stead of helping any, so I have also been a little resistant with steriods. Do you find them useful? Have they helped with your MS? How is your family coping with the seceptable difference with your health? My husband feels awful, even thougth there is nothing he can do, actually I think that just make it worse. Do you find it easier now that you are not working? I have only ever taken one week off for an unexplained seizure, and now it looks like I'll have to stop working for a while and I dont know how I feel about that, but its family first and I'll do what I have to. How do you do it with such a big family?

    Re: Pregnant with MS?

Hi Andrea, I am also expecting in April! I just wanted to send you a note and tell you about one of my best friends. she has MS she has had 2 kids in the last 4 years. She had very healthy babies and was in almost a complete remission while pregnant and still while breastfeeding. she is going to BF as long as she can. or as long as the doc allows her to before putting her back on her meds. If you ever have a question, I can email her for you she would be more than willing to give advice or share stories, etc. As far as the pain and sleep issues I can relate. I have FMS and have had a very difficult time getting off all my meds, but i know once the second trimester comes around i will be feeling better! hang in there!

    Re: Pregnant with MS?

Sorry it took so long to reply! I also have degenerative disc disease. My MS symptoms actually presented themselves immediately after back surgery I had when my son was 2 mo old. I can see why you are hesitant to use the steroids but to me they are a God send! For me the bladder issues are the most irritating and constantsymptomn. I retain urine and am suseptible to frequent bladder infections. My family is amazing! They are all so supportive and helpful in every way. Which is wonderful and frustrating at the same time. I'm used to do8ing everything and I hate asking for help. My kids are super loving and have been very helpful. They went through a little phase were they were little heathens because they thought they could get away with murder since I was "out of commision" but that didn't last. I'm still the boss just a lot slower. lol This has been really hard on my husband mbut he has been wonderful. I've seen support groups in our area for people with MS but they need to involve the whole family because MS affects the whole family. I hate m,y shots and initially I gave myself them in each of the six injection site and my husband has done them every since. I really have mixed feelings about being off work. As for the big family, I always wanted a big family. And like with everything else, you just do it and make it work! I really hope that despite the pain and complications of MS you are able to enjoy your pregnancy!
