    1st pregnancy with weight worries....

Hi everyone, I am 24 and my husband and I are pregnant with our first child. I am about 17 weeks right now. Before I became pregnant I was overweight, I am 5'6" and fluctuated b/t 175-180lbs. I have always been bigger. I was pretty sick the first 12 weeks and ended up losing a few lbs. I have stayed about 180lbs, only gaining about 2 lbs. My midwife is starting to seem concerned by this but my 15 weeks u/s was normal and baby's heart beat is fine and I am feeling movement at times too. Other pregnant women I have talked to have said that if I am taking my vitamins and eating regularly I should be fine, not to obsess about weight. I feel I am actually lucky, esp. since I started out heavy. Is my midwife obessesing to much, am I?? Everything has been perfectly normal so far!!!! I'm so frusterated, please help!

I wouldn't worry one bit.  I too was a little overweight at the beginning of my pregnancy.  I am 5'9" and was 183 lbs prepregnancy.  I only gained 2 lbs the up till my 20 wk appt.  At my 24 wk appt. I had gained another 7 so you will gain when you need to.  There are guidelines for gaining weight but they are just that and everyone is different.  As long as you are eating healthy and your baby is developing normal do not obsess about the weight.  My doctor has had no concerns at all and even said that I am doing well with my weight gain even with the 7 lbs in 4 weeks.  LOL

I would probably also say that as long as you're taking care of yourself and everything else is fine, not to worry about the baby. I started each of my pregnancies at about 185 (193 for my second pregnancy- but they were close so I hadn't lost all the weight) and I'm 5 foot tall (or should I say short?) with my first I gained 40lbs, ending the pregnancy at about 227, and with my second I only gained 18, but like I said I hadn't lost all the weight from the first time and so had started a little higher. With my current pregnancy I started around 185-187 again and have put on about 30lbs so far. It's slowing down for me as I'm running out of room to eat (30weeks 3 days along now, with chronic diabetes=big baby, small torso=no room), so since I can't eat as much I'm hoping not to put on more than 10lbs- that will at least mean that I haven't gained more than with any other pregnancy. I hope this helps, and again, I wouldn't worry about it- if baby's doing well and you're doing well, then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Best wishes!

Thanks for easing my mind a bit!! I'll have to let you know what happens at my next appt. It's Oct. 31st, HALLOWEEN!! So you started gaining more around your 6 month mark? I kind of think that will be me too. How far are you now?

I started gaining LESS in the last month- in the second trimester I was gaining an average of 2lbs/week. I am almost 31 weeks now.

I to am on the short side (5'2) and overweight. I started out at 225 and lost down to 209 in the first three months. I am almost 4 months along now. I dont know if I have lost or gained this month but I will find out on the 22nd at my next visit. My doctor doesnt seemed concerned though. I was never really sick just couldnt eat much and I think thats what triggered the weight loss. Instead of eating 3 big meals a day, I am only able to eat smaller snack sized meals every couple hours or so. I feel fine and the baby is fine so I dont stress about it. This is my first one also and I was a little worried at first but the doctor says that it happens often when the mom is overweight. Somehow the body just kind of regulates itself. I think its cause the baby eats up everything and doesnt leave anything for me. lol lol lol Good luck and best wishes!!!!

This is my 2nd pregnancy. With the first I gained 40 lbs in total, and lost 30 of it before becoming pregnant again. I am 29 weeks right now and have gained a total of 18 lbs so far, but most has happened in the last 8 weeks.

I find that the first trimester m/s tends to keep the weight low. You feel yucky and food you usually love is not so appetizing! I think as long as you are eating properly, taking your vitamins and all signs look good at appts, you are fine! I am sure the weight gain will come down the road...
