    Medications?

So what medacation if any is your baby on? Tristan is on Reglan. He also has a nebulizor because the reflux was causing him to asperate and making him wheeze, as well as alot of chest congestion. He has made such an improovement!  Still spits up alot, but nowhere near as much as he was.

    Re: Medications?

Ryan is on Prevacid and a prescription hypoallergenic formula.  The Prevacid really helps, he still has the reflux but he doesn't scream everytime it comes up in his throat.

    Re: Medications?

Tristan has never screamed from his reflux, just gets uncomfortable just before he spits up.  He is breast fed, so I can only imagine how bad it would be if he wasn't.  I know dairy makes it worse, but since starting the meds it doesn't effect him as much unless I go dairy nuts! LOL  Yeah I get my cheese back! LOL I work full time so I pump for when I'm gone but he really only eats about 8oz in the 9hrs that I'm gone.  He eats alot at night and when I'm home, and boy is he a chunker! I noticed he has put on a few lbs since starting the Reglan lol We only have to do his breathing treatments every 3-4 days now, so I'm happy about that.  The Dr's had me pretty ticked for a while there. Poor guy had a lot of chest congestion since he was 2 weeks old. I kept taking him in asking about it, and they all said normal, same with the large amounts of spit up.  Wella week before hie 4 month check up he started wheezing really bad, so we took him in, and the Dr gave him albuterol to take and had to go back in 2 days.... Ok the albuterol keept the wheezing down for 2hrs but the dosing was 4hrs. :(  So then we get a script for the Reglan, and a return trip 2 days later.....  Then we go back and are given a script for antibiotics, and told if they don't help they need to do a chest x-ray.  So 3 days later We go back, still wheezy and congested, diffrent Dr sets us up with a nebulizor and thats that...... I wish I could just see 1 Dr and stick with them.  And the whole freaking out at 4months over stuff I been complaining about since 2 weeks was rediculas.... ok, done venting

Logan is on prevacid and maalox. We tried zantac but it didn't work as well as I thought it should so we switched. We use maalox inbetween, normally at least once a day. That does wonders since it helps with gas too!

    Re: Medications?

My daughter has been experiencning reflux for about 5 weeks..since she stopped getting breast milk...she's now 16 weeks old..she's been on zantac and prevacid and there hasnt been much improvement..she fusses all day long and spits up tons..she also wheezes..i never thought that was related to the reflux though? I have heard a lot about the milk alimentum that needs to be prescibed so i am going to ask pediatrcian at our apt tomorrow if he thinks it woudl help..i hate to giev her meds..esp if the improvment is so minimal :(

Has your babies been given x-rays to confirm that it is reflux? I thought tshi was necessary but my doc said no they just base it on symptoms i'm describing..

    Re: Medications?

Something else that you might consider with the prevacid.....when I first started giving it to Logan in the way they suggested he was always drooling out half of it (diluted in water etc...). The medicine cannot be effective unless the full dose is giving regularly. So, I came up with a new method. I take the pill half and place it on my finger tip. I run my other hand under the water and then drip 1 or 2 drops of water on the pill so that it is mushy but not dissolved too much. The I put it in his mouth against his cheeck towards the back. Once I started this I noticed a HUGE difference. Maalox has also helped for those inbetween episodes which has been very rare these days (knock on wood). x-rays really aren't needed for normal cases of feflux. I would suggest keeping her on meds bc it will be worse to have the acid eating at her esphogus. The symptoms are pretty good diganositic tools, I have a nturtion degree and the symptoms are uniform for adults as well. With adults we understand the pain and can do more to avoid it but babies have it harder. They can't spend as much time upright and they don't understand the pain...whereas we sit there and feel uncomfortable and just deal. Most grow out of it by 1 year...some sooner. I don't plan on taking Logan off until around that year mark.

Huh - that is interesting about the medicine. Logan is on breastmilk but I did change my diet a little. I reduced the amount of dairy I as eating, didn't cut it out completely though. That seemed to help. Maybe you could try switching formulas too though - can't help to try!

    Re: Medications?

My 18 week old daughter is on prevacid (she was 10 weeks early) she's been on it for 8 weeks now and she was showing a lot of improvement, but, now it seems like her dosage needs to be increased.

Julie- I'm in canada as well (not NS anymore, Toronto) and Jillian started on Losec- the diluted stuff... I've found that the fast tabs of Losec/Prevacid works SO much better than the concentrated liquid. Just my 2 cents!

    Re: Medications?

Hi all.  I am new to this board.  My son is almost 4 weeks old, and we're going to be starting him on prevacid.  I hope it helps!  He screams out in pain sometimes after eating and spitting up.  We have elevated one end of his crib mattress, so we're trying to keep him angled, too.

    Re: Medications?

My DD has been prescribed Prevacid since she was 3 weeks old. She used to arch, scream, and never sleep. She also choked on her bottles of breastmilk and formula. They added Zantac to the mix at around 6 weeks old. They also weight adjusted the meds at her 2 month appointment and had her on the thickened Enfamil AR formula. She still spits quite a bit, so I got brave and switched her to regular formula. (Her reflux caused me to never be able to rest, drink, or eat, so my milk supply tanked :( Anyway, we're dabbling in rice cereal now that she's 4 months old and I wish she'd take to it more so it'd help her with the spitting. She is now 15 pounds and her meds have not been adjusted. She seems fine, but I'm scared to try her off both....trouble is my stupid insurance company is requiring a prior authorization for prevacid now which is $150 if I want to pay for it out of pocket...it's the weekend and she will most likely run out by Monday.... arrgh!

    Re: Medications?

My son has been having reflux issues since about 2 weeks and has been on Zantac and Prevacid. The Zantac didn't help at all and we just started the Prevacid about two days ago and haven't seen much improvement. We are going to give it a week to see if we get the full effect of the medicine. We have also been giving him oatmeal cereal (the rice cereal was making him constipated) in his night feeding but he still spits up a lot. I swear it has to be at least 1/2 ounce to an ounce each feeding. I'm breastfeeding but am going to try to exclusively pump because I was told that it would help out a lot more if I gave him the cereal at every feeding...Anyone else doing this and has it helped with the spitting up?

    Re: Medications?

^Prevacid actually takes 14-15 days before it reaches it's full effect. Zantac takes 5-7.
