    pump question

I have been having trouble with my milk supply when I pump and have tried almost everything they say to increase it.  Oatmeal, chewing anise seeds, mother's milk tea, increasing pumping sessions, increasing pumping time, etc.  Nothing is working for me.  My baby is usually satisfied when I breastfeed, so I don't think it it is a true supply issue but that I just can't pump enough for him while I am away at work.

I am using an older breastpump (it is a Medela pump n style, probably 4+ years old), do you think it could be the pump that is the problem?  I was thinking of purchasing a new pump to see if that would help, but didn't want to spend the $$ if it didn't seem to be a logical solution.  I guess I may have to just be satisfied with the fact that I will have to supplement while my little guy is in day care.

     Thanks in advance!!!

How long are you pumping? How often? Are you pumping both sides at once?

    Re: pump question

hi there.  i hang out a lot at kellymom.com and whenever someone is having trouble pumping they always reccomend changing the parts.  the membranes i think.  maybe you can get new parts which wont be as expensive.  is it manual or electric.  maybe a service would help.  honestly i think its the pump, especially if baby is satisfied.

also have you tried breast compressions.  i find i get an extra ounce or 2 out by doing them.

hth, keep us posted on what you decide to do.

    Re: pump question

My daughter is satisfied when she nurses but I can't pump enough while she is in daycare.  Before she hit 6months old I pumped 4 times a day to get her 2 feedings for while I was gone (pumping first thing in the morning, twice at work and right before bed at night).   At 6months I suddenly just couldn't pump enough even with pumping longer periods of time and more often (I didn't really have anymore time to add any pumping in).  So I decided that I would suppliment, and along with doing so I've also stopped pumping except twice at work.  I HATE PUMPING!!  I did change my pump pieces out (membranes and tried different size cone thingies) and it didn't help at all.  In my personal experiece the pump has nothing to do with it, my body just doesn't respond to the pump the way it does my daughter.

    Good luck!
