    Baby has hearing loss..

Hi girls :). I have a 3.5 month old daughter who has no hearing in her right ear, but can hear in her left.  I'm not sure how much this will challenge her but I'm considering teaching her to sign...any tips? At what age would I start to teach her?

I think you can teach her as early as you can but check with your doctor first if there is anything you can do to cure the other ear to hear. But to me, if the other ear hears perfectly, then dont treat her with disability. At some people, the other senses will develop more for the loss of one. Good luck.

If she has partial hearing loss, what is it from? Is there a possibilty she could loose it in her other ear? Is there a possibilty she could get full hearing back from surgery or other treatments?

If she could loose all hearing, you should start as early as possible. On my birth board, people have suggested about 3-6 months as a good age to start. I'm going to do it with my hearing son.

I think knowing ASL is good at any age. Knowing another language is always beneficial. Your daughter is in a unique situation because if she learns ASL, she may have many more opportunities later in life.

Hi, I teach children who have hearing losses. Most of the students that I see only have a unilateral hearing loss(loss in one ear). The main issues that I see with them is learning to hear in the presence of background noise and locating the source of a sound. Teaching your baby sign would only benefit her. I have taught all of my children sign from an early age. I am teaching my third daughter sign now, she is 11 weeks old. Feel free to PM me with any other questions or concerns you might have. Kasey

Everyone I've talked too says babies pick it up really easily. My friend's baby could make about 15 signs by the time he was 9 months old. I think she started when he was 3 months old.

Well, babies with deaf parents sign with them right from birth so I would say there is no age too early to start!

Hi Melissa! how is Lanie's ear doing? I am teaching Marcos sign language. I've been borrowing books from the library to learn more. they say it is beneficial even for children who can hear. It helps them communicate earlier. My cousin is also teaching her daughter. She bought a sign language for babies kit at Target. It has baby books, a dvd and a guide. I'm going to buy it when I can.

Hi! I just wanted to give you a little insight. I'm 23 and almost completely deaf in one ear, and I don't feel like it has affected me at all! Mine actually occured later on in life ( around the age of 18 ). It took a little while but, eventually I never even noticed. The only thing I hear people say about it is that I talk a little louder but, I was loud and outgoing to begin with!! LOL! I'm sure you daughter will adjust just fine! Good luck with sign language! I really wanted to teach my first ds but, never got around to it...I plan on teaching my ds (due in July) though! Let us know how it goes!
