    breast pump recommendations

Hi ladies.  I am visiting from the November 2009 board.  I am hoping someone can give a recommendation on a pump.  This is my 2nd and last baby.  I will be going back to work after the baby is born so need a pump that is somewhat discreet and easy to use.  The pump I had for DS was manual and I hated it.  Looking to spend around $150.  Also thought of renting, but not sure if renting for a full year is cost effective.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Karen! I had my son (also my 2nd, coincidentally) in December. I was price shopping and comparing pumps myself, only wanting to spend around $150 as well. When I went in to the hospital to have him, however, I discovered that if you have Blue Cross Blue Sheild insurance, they pay for it! It came out of my out of pocket maximum, but if you order it after you have the baby, the cost of the delivery will come out first. I ended up only paying $22 for a $300 Medela PIS Advanced Shoulder Bag. If your insurance does not cover this, I would still recommend forking out the extra cash. It is extremely inconspicuous, quiet, and works great. I have been back to work since my son was 9 weeks old (he is now 7 mo.) and I pump at least 3 times per day. It comes with a battery pack so you can pump even in places with no electrical outlet nearby. I bought a hands free bra from a store at the hospital and I can even pump in my car driving to and from work or when I am on the road for work! It also helps when you are trying to get other things done during your pumping sessions. It is also really convenient because you can find replacement parts for them anywhere in case you lose one or forget to put it in your bag. It def pays for itself very quickly. Think of all the formula money you would save! I read review after review on cheaper pumps, and none of them compare to the Medela brand. Lansinoh used to make one that seemed pretty comparable, but they took it off the shelves at Babies R Us because it was not BPA free. Good luck!

I would definately recommend a Medela, you can go to their website and compare all the different types they have to see what will work best for you.

Hi! I found a pump for $150 and it was right at Target....it is a Lansinoh pump and I have attached the link....I Love it and the suction was as good as the hospital Medela that I rented for 6 wks.....I LOVED the Lansinoh products after my son was born, so that made me try it.....from what I understand, (and you can tell from looking at them)....it is the same as the Ameda Purely yours....I think they have a new one called the Purely Yours ULTRA...but I don't know how much that costs, but the Purely Yours costs the same $150.....

Thanks for all the info.  My neighbor, who also happens to be preggo and due 10 days after me, has 2 medela pump in style pumps.  One is hers and one is her sisters.  She is going to lend me one of them.  So, all I have to do is buy the parts that need to be replaced.  HUGE money saver.  One more thing to cross off my list!!
