Low Protein Levels Trigger Infant-Formula Recall

The Food and Drug Administration and a unit of Danone SA on Tuesday told health professionals that they are recalling the infant formula Neocate because it contains low protein levels.

The FDA said Nutricia's infant formula, Neocate, contains lower protein levels than indicated on the product's label, due to a blending error. Nutricia is a unit of Danone, a French food company.

Nutricia said in a statement the recall affects 3,700 cans and that no adverse events have been associated with the recall.

Although short-term consumption of the product from the affected batch "is very unlikely to cause immediate nutritional issues, longer-term consumption might influence the healthy growth curve in certain infants," the company said in a note to health professionals.

The formula isn't given for general use and is usually used in infants under the care of a doctor.

The affected cans were distributed from Sept. 1 through Sept. 11.
