    croup

We spent Thursday night in the ER! Gibson had croup. They said it was one of the worst cases they'd seen in awhile. Thought they were going to have to keep him overnight but he responded so well to the steroid injection that they sent us home around 4am. It was so scary! He would start to try to cough but couldn't get enough air and would end up choking and gasping for air and looking up at me desperately like "do something mommy!" they put him on oxygen, gave him a steroid mist mask, then a steroid shot and it has helped soooo much. BUT he is eating like CRAZY!!! Yesterday he nursed me dry, plus went thru 3 bags of stored milk, plus formula!!! Does anyone know how long the appetite surge lasts? I've NEVER had a production/supply problem - NEVER had to supplement even during growth spurts so I know its the steroids!

Poor guy! Sorry to hear about the croup... I know that season is fast approaching. We just pulled the croup tents out of storage at work... usually gets busy starting at Thanksgiving. Declan's eating like crazy... I think we're on the verge of starting food.

    Re: croup

My two year old gets croup all the time. We had a scary incident like you had with Gibson when he was 6 months. Landon still gets it any time he gets a runny nose. Thankfully his Pedi gave us a prescription steroid to start giving him the minute he sounds barky. In fact I was just back at the Pedi ths week with him for it and now that he is two we are trying Singulair so he isn't always on steroids. He shouldn't be as hungry three days after the shot. I hope he feels better. I have spent many days & nights sitting in the bathroom while a scolding shower was going to help Landon & it is no fun.

That would be so scary.  I'm glad that he responded well and is on the mend though.

Yikes Briana. How scary. Hope he gets to feeling better. You ok? Poor Gibson! Glad he's doing a little better. How do babies get croup? Glad it wasn't H1N1.

Hmph, well if thats the case I think its time to start him on solids.  He actually only had that one day after the shot where he was ravenously hungry, but now yesterday and today he's been the same way.  He nurses like every 30 minutes and still seems hungry.  I'm thinking tonight we're going to have some rice cereal, and not just in the bottle... some REAL cereal!!  He'll be 4 months in one week from today, and I'm sorry but I don't think any magic transformations are going to occur in the next week... I think he's ready now!

We ended up having to give Landon(my 2 y/o) steroids again last night after trying a week of Singulair and he woke up in the middle of the night starving! So I understand. He ate all day today and this is coming from a little boy that hardly eats anything. Those steroids make them SO hungry, it is crazy! Is Gibson sounding better yet?
