My son is 18 months, will be 19 months on November 30th, and is only able to say maybe 6 to 8 words. He can say a few more, if prompted, but he cannot pronounce his M's (no mama, it's so sad), G's, F's, or K's as far as I can tell. He tries for words containing those letters, and can't ever get them out right, or even understandable to anyone but me or DH. He calls our cat, Kit Kit, Dit Dit. While it is stinkin' adoreable most of the time, I wonder if he's lagging behind a little. I know every child develops differently, but my sister's daughter was speaking in 2-3 word sentences by his age. I'm not worried about things like autism, because he seems to be very bright and full of expression, and loves read books with me, and to engage other kids and adults in play, make believe, and babbling. He is tongue tied, which I discovered shortly after his birth, when he was never able to latch on a bottle, and I was forced to quit my job to stay home to nurse him. It never affected his natural nursing, but he was unable to latch onto any type of artificial nipple, no matter how hard he tried. His tongue is very cute and heart shaped, but he can't stick it out like other kids. I chose not to have any medical intervention done to correct the problem, since he was able to nurse from me wonderfully (gained weight like a champ) so I assumed the tongue-tie wasn't severe. Now I'm wondering if that might have something to do wth his minor speech delay. Does anyone else in here have a child with a tongue-tie? Any advice for me at all? I, know this is the baby page, and my son is well over a year old. I just really want to know if this is totally normal, or if I should try to enlist early speech therapy or something.
