Anyone dealing with acid reflux in their baby?

Our 6-week old girl, Ellia, is very fussy and her pediatrician believes she may have acid reflux. We are starting with some holistic remedies, but was wondering how others out there dealt with infants with acid reflux or just plain extreme fussiness. Thanks for your help!

My 6wk old son had reflux. He was diagnosed when he was just 2wks old. He had a bad spell that sent him to the ER. He is currently taking Zantac which seems to help a bit. But really you have to burp a reflux baby really well, and slow down feedings by burping them before they finish(like in between). My son has it really bad and can sometimes choke on his own spit up, and stop breathing for a while. I have to watch him really closely after feedings. Good luck with you LO. Its hard for me, but I manage. They say once he can sit up on his own, it will go away.

In our house sugery at 3 weeks of age. The dr started treating our little angel at 3 weeks for acid reflux, even though I knew what was wrong in my heart I went a long with the doctor. Mary like her big brother Joseph had pyloric stenosis. so every bottle she had she was vomitting up. it started out slowly and seemed like bad spit up then it proceeded to get worse. Some things they told us to do for her if it was the reflux was add 1 teaspoon of rice cereal for every ounce of formula, burp her halfway through the bottle then again at the end, hold her upright for 30 minutes after each feeding and fix her mattress so her head was elevated to a 45 degree angle.

Our 5 week old little boy was just diagnose with reflux. The doctor put him on Prevacid and changed his formula to Enfamil Gentlease. He has been on this for about 48 hours and is still having spit-up issues. It seems his spit-up is worse now than with his other formula (or the other two we have tried). He is lactose-intolerant so that adds to the problem. I burp him throughout his feeding and pause in-between and make sure he burps well at the end. Then I keep him upright on my chest for about 30 min. This helps some, but we're still seeing spit-up and gagging. Hopefully our treatment will work.

Re: Anyone dealing with acid reflux in their baby?

Hi there, I'm visiting from July.  We have been dealing with AR since 6 weeks with my son.  He is now 14 weeks.  We started him on Enfamil Gentle Ease which didn't work out for us.  He was switched to Similac Alimentum...this helped significantly with the spitting up.  He is also on Prevacid once daily in the morning.  Some other things we do:

    • When feeding, use a semi sitting position rather than laying down
    • When feeding, do not rock, sit still
    • After feeding, keep baby upright for at least 15 minutes
    • Burp often during feeding
    • When holding baby, hold baby facing outward...I've heard that this is easier on the baby's tummy
    • Feed smaller amounts more frequently throughout the day
    • Add rice or oatmeal cereal to bottles to thicken up, this helps keep the formula/milk down (I've heard of people using Enfamil AR which I think has something already added to it that thickens)

Good luck!  Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, I know how frustrating this can be!!

My son, Garrett, is 11 weeks old and we have been dealing with reflux (and colic) since he was about 2 weeks old. He started out on Zantac but that didn't help and now he is on Prevacid and it helps some. We also add rice cereal to his formula which does help with the spitting up. He cries or is fussy quite a bit. I also give him gripe water which helps settle his stomach. I just add it to his bottle a few times a day and so far it has helped us out a lot! We feed him in a semi upright position and keep him upright for about 30 minutes after each feeding. We burp him about every ounce to two ounces. With the reflux he can only eat about 3 ounces at each sitting so we feed him more often with smaller amounts. I am hoping he will out grow it soon but until he does we have learned how to deal with it. Good luck to you! Stephanie

I'm visiting from August - Logan has reflux and is on prevacid which helps A LOT but he also takes 1 ml Maalox in between up to 3 times daily. That's on an as needed basis. That helps A LOT too since it covers so many symptoms, including gas :) I also found that limiting my dairy intake has helped. I still eat about 2.5 servings a day but I was eating much much more (yogurt is one of my favorite foods). Cut that down and he's doing better.
