    Peanut butter?

How many of you have given peanut butter to your babies?  With the others, I waited until after one year.  I just gave Lily a little after she was eyeballing Sam's PB&J.  I remember a long time ago at WIC, I was scolded for giving peanut butter to my kids before the age of 4!  There's no history of peanut allergies in either family, and the sensitivities she had as a tiny little thing seem to be gone.  I accidentally gave her apples awhile back (she had a reaction to apples early on), it was one of those oatmeal & something jars that said nothing about apples on the front.  Anyway, I was horrified when I saw the ingredients after I fed her the jar!  She had no reaction, and I have given her apples since with no problem.  So, either the sensitivity is gone, or something else caused the slimey diarrhea and rash.  I have also tried a tiny bit of salmon since her reaction to the dha cereal, and no reaction.  So, I'm not really sure what was going on before, but it looks like she doesn't have any food allergies, thank goodness.

I think it's fine. I mean, if you already gave her a little and she ate it with no reaction I'd say your in the safe zone. The only thing I would say is just remember, we can all develop allergies at any time in our lives. She seems to have outgrown the sensitivities yeah.

I don't give it to them til 2. I have heard it is a BIG no no, due to the allergies that can flare up. That is just me though.

That's actually the old belief.  You only need to withhold it if you have peanut allergies in your family.  It's really only advised that you wait until the age of 1 because it's a choking hazard if they get too much.  I was just wondering if anybody else has tried it.  This being #4, I guess I'm not so scared, lol.  Here, I found this

Turns out, after scouring all the available studies, the AAP has found no validation of their previous advice to hold back on peanut butter, eggs and other potential troublemakers. The new statement was published in January's issue of the journal Pediatrics. By the way, the old advice, released back in 2000, had been directed mainly to allergy-prone families, but in my experience it had been adopted by a wide swath of the parenting public.

They found no conclusive data showing that introducing peanut butter, wheat, fish or eggs at any age -- beyond the 4-to-6-month period -- had any impact on allergies.

    Re: Peanut butter?

see as a kid my husband was allergic to a ton of stuff.  My oldest is allergic to peanuts/treenuts.  SO we only have pb and j sandwichs when she is at school.  I waited to introduce peanut butter till my other two girls were 2yrs old, b/c of my oldest's allergies.  Am I making sense?  Its late here and I'm very tired, LOL!  Anyway, I'd say if she did fine with it and you have no history of allergies, then why not give it to her!  Big Smile

Yeah, that's what I mean . . . Of course, we had a family history, I wouldn't have given it to her.  I guess I'm the weirdo here, since there aren't many responses!  LOL  Oh well, she loved it, and while it won't be an everyday thing, I'll give it to her once in awhile.

my peditrician recommends waiting to age two if your family has a history of alot of food allergies but my MIL gave my eldest some PB before she was one without any reaction but i will wait till a year with amber just to be safe but most of the time WIC and the dr`s say to wait till age 2 but mine is really laid back so it all works out

I think she will be fine if there is no history of allergies.

    Re: Peanut butter?

I have a peanut allergy (even the smell bothers me) so I will never be the one to give Asher peanut butter... he will probably never have it until he's a lot older because of that. Waiting until they're 4 seems a bit extreme. I heard (can't remember from where) that peanut butter is fine at a year old. As long as there's no reason to believe your child has an allergy to the food, I see no reason to not try out the food in small amounts.

I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I could have sworn I read somewhere that holding off on foods like peanut butter, strawberries, etc., can actually increase the chances of developing an allergy cause your baby wouldn't have had a chance to get it in their system early enough???? Idk, something like that. I could be wrong though.

Aiden had some of my DD's PB&J just the other day. Just small little pieces but he was screaming at it and she wasn't eating it. WIC started giving DD peanut butter at 2 years old. She loves PB&J and asks for them all the time.

Not here.  DS2 gave DD some about a month ago and I totally freaked out!!!  I usually wait until after 2.

eta:  I don't wait until 2 because of food allergies as we have no history in our family.....I wait because of the possible choking hazard.

I think all the allergy stuff is crap!! No soy no wheat no pb etc etc... How come our parents arent allergic to this stuff? Cause the overparenting weirdos of today's America made it up to get more attention for their precious little Jimmy.
