    Sophia Nicole

I was admitted on Sunday at 7pm for my induction and when I was put on the monitors they told me that I was already in labor and I didn't even realize it!  I was contracting every 2-3 minutes.  Everything was going as normal and around midnight I was at 4 and asked for the epidural.  The contractions were getting harder, but I was ok to deal with it, but I was tired and needed sleep, so I got the epidural.  When my Dr checked me out at 5am I was at 7 cm.  We were all thinking that we would have a baby sometime around noon.  Low and behold, Sophia had plans of her own.  At noon I was still at 7 cm, so my dr gave me pitocin and by 4 I was at 10 and they wanted me to push.

Two problems..1.  When I went from 9 to 10, Sophia was hitting my sciatic nerve and the epidural wasn't even coming close to numbing that pain.  The epidural was tapered off at 9 and I was able to handle the contractions ok, but NOTHING can compare to the nerve pain.  It went from my left hip right down the side to my thigh and was constant.  They asked for the epidural to start up again and I couldn't feel the contractions...which by the way were 100% back labor!  I never felt pain in my stomach.  But the epi didn't do anything for the nerve.  2.  I never got the urge to push.  Sophia was still midway between a station 0 to a +1 and never moved, even after 45 minutes of pushing though the nerve pain.  I was just pushing because they told me to.  After the 45 minutes I gave up and said I couldn't handle the nerve pain anymore.  My dr came in and we decided that it would be best for a c-section.

In the O.R. the surgery went quick, but when they pulled Sophia out she didn't cry or respond.  They took her to the bed and within 10 seconds I heard them call the NICU.  No-one would tell me anything and I was so scared.  After 10 minutes they got her to cry, but said she would have to go to the NICU for a while to be monitored.  Later I asked what happened and they said that she wasn't breathing in the beginning and had to give her oxygen.  Her 1st APGAR score was a 3, her 2nd was a 4 and finally her 3rd was a 9.  I didn't get to see her until 7am the next morning.  She was brought down to the regular nursery at 11, but I was out from the drugs.  By the time I left she was given a clean bill of health and she is the most perfect baby ever!!  She is 5 days old now and we are on a great schedule, she has taken to breastfeeding so well and sleeps about 4 to 5 hours between feedings.

Re: *** July Firecrackers 2007 Birth Stories ***

Around 10:00pm on July 11th I started having cramps. They were coming and going on a regular basis, not like the BH that came and went.  I also had diarrhea that night so I told my husband that this may be the night.  I then tried to watch Rescue Me.  The cramps kept coming for the whole hour.  They were anywhere from 6-10 minutes apart.  I told my mom and called my sisters and friends and put them on high alert.  The birth class said don't go to the hospital until the contractions 5 minutes apart and you can't talk thru them.  Well, they started coming between 5-6 minutes apart and I began to barely be able to talk thru them.  I went to the bathroom to go pee and when I wiped there was blood. I got very nervous and decided it was time to go.  It was about midnight.  I woke up my mother and husband and we were at the hospital in 5 minutes. I was hooked up to the machines and the Dr came in and said that I was in fact in labor so I was admitted. No one seemed concerned about the blood. The Dr asked me if I thought about pain management and if I wanted any drugs. After a few hours of contractions, I said what ever you have I'll take. Its 1:00 in the am, I'm in active labor and maybe 1cm dilated.  I don't want to be in pain for the next 20 hours.  They gave me something in an IV drip and let me sleep for a few hours.  They said I needed to be rested for when it became time to push.
The hours are a blur, but the next morning I was given an Epiand hours of Pitocen.  I guess I was in labor forever because she wasn't born until 6:16 pm on the 12th.  Sometime during the contractions I felt a gush, I thought it was blood, but it was my water breaking.  I started pushing about 4:00pm.  They asked if I had rectal pressure.  I said yes - for about an hour now.  They set up a mirror so I could see what was going on.  The nurse opened my labia with her fingers and the baby's head was right there!  I pushed for 2 hours.  I didn't feel like I was making any progress.  After 2 hours the baby's heart rate started to rise during contractions, so they decided I needed some help.  The brought in the vacuum and the NICU team.  My family said they couldn't believe how hard the Dr was pulling.  It looked like she needed some help too!  Dalila finally came out at 6:16pm on July 12th.  She was blue so my husband was unable to cut her cord.  The NICU team took her and did their thing (in the labor room still) - she was very quiet but they assured me she was OK.  Her APGAR was 4 then 9.  Everything was fine.  I didn't rip open or need an episiotomy - thank GOD!  I just had a few small tears in my labia nd inside that she sewed up.
I had to wait until the EPI wore off before I could be moved to my room.  I was unable to pee on my own so they had to put the catheter back in to empty my bladder.  I was moved to my room, and had something to eat.  Later that night, I was still unable to pee so they had to put a catheter in again.  This time is hurt so much because the pain meds wore off and I was already tramatized and swollen down there.  OH MY GOD the pain.  The cathater stayed in all the next day.  I was so miserable.  I hurt so much and it inhibited my movement.  So the pain of just having given birth, the catheter and breastfeeding - that entire next day was awful.  I was so afraid for them to take it out because I didnt want them to have to put it back in again, but I was in so much pain. They took it out around dinner time and  few hours later I was able to pee.  I was so relived!  I was so much more comfortable that night and the next day. We came home on the 14th and the whole breastfeeding nightmare started from there.

I love her so much - she is so perfect and beautiful.  I am looking forward to when she can hold her head up and interact more.  I can't wait to hear her little voice speak and finally be able to see her little personality.

She is a little fussy girl right now.  She is either sleeping eating or crying. She doesn't like to be put down.  So someone always has to be holding her.  The binky is also a lifesaver.  She definitely needs the pacifier to passify her!

She is not sleeping thru the night yet.  Some nights its two hour spans others its 4.  Once in a while she will sleep for 5 hours.  If she would sleep from 12-6 I would be happy.

Well ok here is the story.
On Tuesday Aug 7 at 11 am we went to the hospital for our appointment for induction.    We got there and were told "your appointment has been bumped to 1pm".  So we come back at 1 and we are told she has been told to wait to start the induction at 3 PM.  So we wait.  Then my blood pressure is too high so I am sent from the day OB department to Labour and Delivery.  Finally at 8 PM they give me the first dose of the medication to start induction and tell me to sit tight, next dose is not for 6 more hours.  Then they move me to a more comfy room because they need to labour room for an emergency who has come in.  They say they will be back at 2 am to get me and give me my next dose.  Well 2 am comes, Craig asks and they say "oh well we have had a lot of emergencies so we won't be getting her until 6 am"  Now he is pissed off and very tired and I am sooooooo sleepy...but resting.  He goes home and gets some sleep and comes back to find that they have decided to bring me back to L/D at 7 am and try a different procedure.  Well this procedure is very painful, and instead of the doctor on call doing it she walks away and lets two residents do it, which makes it even more painful!!....and she did it wrong!!...well now they are moving me from the little hole in the wall room they gave me to a much bigger room.  They try again....all I have to say is OUCH...and once again does work.  Then the doc comes in. Says she can check me and try and if she can't do it then I can have my epidural then do it.  I said  no just do the epi then try!!  So the epi is done....works great, didn't even feel it!   Now two more residents come in to do that stupid procedure and find I have started to dilate 2 cm  so they break my water instead and start the oxcitocin and bring on labour, which I can't feel because I have the wonderful epi.    Ok so now I am starting to dilate...and it's also now Thursday (remember I went there on Tuesday).  Long story short I get stuck at 5 cm.   Doesn't move from there.  Finally around midnight we decide just do the freaken c-section I can't take any more.    And at 3:30 a 10 lb 12.4 oz Selena June Cotie was born!!!!  No wonder she wasn't coming out!!!  We finally got home on Monday and we have been very tired every since.
