    2yo diagnosed type 1

My son was just diagnosed as type 1 on Thursday, after a horribly scary trip to the ER for what we thought was a bad stomach virus, only to find out his blood sugar was 1250. We were taken to childrens hospital, and told he may not make it through the night. He did make it, and we came home a few days later, full of information, and stocked with 2 kinds of insulin, meters, etc. It's an odd situation when you believe you have a completely healthy 2 year old, only to find out they have a life long disease. I hope to find other mothers here who have info, as I am new to all of this, and can use any advice and support I can get. TYIA.

    OMG, how terrifying for you!

I'm not 2 years old, but I was just diagnosed Type 1 a few months ago when I dropped 35 lbs and could barely walk upstairs.  There's definitely a lot to learn and it's scary at first, but once you get through the first few weeks, it should start to seem easier.  I actually just started on an insulin pump a few weeks ago and that has made everything more manageable - instead of giving myself injections, I just enter the number of carbs I'm eating into a handheld unit and it does the rest.  That's something you could consider in the future (www.myOmniPod.com) - that's the one I'm using.  It's great for children because it's wireless and tubeless.  I highly recommend you think about it once you have become more familiar with your son's diabetes.

There's a great community of parents with young Type 1 children on the American Diabetes Association site, I'm sure you can find a LOT of support there: http://community.diabetes.org/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=adaparents

    Good luck!

hey, sorry to hear your little man got diagnosed. I was diagnosed with type 1 when I was 13. I started pumping about 1 year ago and love it. Something to consided alot later down the track. Hope everything is going ok. It can be a bit of a rollercoster in the first 12 months after diagnosis.
