Any Grad. School Moms out there...

Hi, my name is Deon and I am expecting my first baby in September.  I am currently working on my graduate degree in Applied Sociology and will be at the thesis writting stage of my degree when the baby comes.  Are there any other Moms or Moms to be on here that are in grad school?  How has the experience been so far?  I know in my program, people look at me like I'm crazy for  having a baby while I'm still in school...how about you?

Congrats on the baby and on school. I am in my last month of an MBA and JD program. And I have had two children during my time in school. I am crazy beyond belief but happy that I had the babies at this time in my life. It is easier to miss class than work after all, and my kids love to learn. People will continue to look at you like you are crazy, just wait until you nurse in class lol.

I'm finishing my Ph.D. in history... have just a few more chapters to finish of my dissertation. It's funny, most people think I am crazy for waiting as long as I did... they think it would be so easy to have a baby while writing. My baby is due in January, and I hope to finish by September. This is the big motivation I needed in order to finish!

I had my daughter while in Grad school. It's a challenge, but can be done. My advice, when someone offers to watch your kids or help you out TAKE IT! I would write my papers while breastfeeding my daughter and tried to sleep when she did. I actually had to take incompletes in my last semester due to bed rest. Even tho my daughter was born early and spent time in the NICU, I was able to graduate on time and with honors. YOU CAN DO IT! Just hang in there and breath.

I finished my MA 2 years ago this December in Educational Leadership. I was still going for my degree when my daughter was born in 03. It was truly a challege. Then my husband went for his...all paid for by the air national guard. That was the only way we could do it. He just got a vice principal's spot. I did use my degree a bit as an adjunct professor in two colleges nearby. I loved it. Wouldn't mind going full time but I need that PHD! I have started looking at it. Anyone else out there or am I crazy? Or do I want to go into law? Right now I know I am not happy in my job right now but it is secure. I went for one job in my own town as a vice principal in August 07. I went 5 rounds of interviews and many suits. FInally I got that call that it was not mine. I was ok with it. A few weeks later I found out I was pregnant but lost the baby a few months into the pregnancy. Lots of stress but I know I will use my degree some more. Mommyhood is more important now but as you can see I still struggle with the idea of getting another degree and moving up the ladder of success. I want to break that glass celing! Melanie
