  8 mo old gagging on baby food. Reply Contact Recently I tried giving my 8mo old son level 3 baby food b/c the level 2 jars just arent big enough for him anymore. But when I feed it to him, he just gags the chunks. His dr once said, while he was looking at his throat, that he had a very strong gag reflex. I kinda feel like there maybe something wrong, b/c my two best friends have babies that are no more than 10 days older than him & they eat level 3 jars fine! Has anyone else had this problem? & do you think he will outgrow it? Thanks

  Re: 8 mo old gagging on baby food. Reply Contact Try breaking the chunks up even smaller to get him used to the level 3.. If his pediatrician knows his gag reflex is strong then you can also call the nurse/dr office and ask them what you should do.. He should outgrow it.. It will just take him some time to get used to eating different types, textures of foods.. My son wa well into his 2nd year before he really would quit being lazy (because of his gag reflex) and chew normal foods. Remember most babies are also teething at 8 months old too--so you have the extra saliva in his mouth along w/ the gag reflex. My son is now 3 and he gags just seeing dog poop! LOL Each baby is different and special. Ask the pediatrician next visit if you feel better-- there may be something you can do to help him--like keep adding cereal to help it slide down his throat. OR worse case scenario--he may not be ready for level 3 and just have to mix Level 2 and 3 for him...

Reply Contact My 9 mth old did the same thing until he got familiar with the substance of the food. He'll be fine just keep trying him with it and sooner or later he'll get it. It's just something new to him.
