They're hanging in there. Vincent just got over a bout of pneumonia. That was scary! His left lung is still not fully inflated and he's on a jet ventilator. Gabriel was put on a jet ventilator today too because the regular vent was over-expanding his lungs and causing some problems. They are finally up past their birth weights! Vincent is 2 lbs. 2 oz. today and Gabriel is 2 lbs. 5 oz. I'll post some pictures in a little while. I have to go grab Callie....

So glad you updated and can't wait for pictures.  I think about them often.  My cousin's baby was born a couple of days shy of 24 weeks and she is seven years old now and so incredibly funny.

So glad you updated and can't wait for pictures.  I think about them often.  My cousin's baby was born a couple of days shy of 24 weeks and she is seven years old now and so incredibly funny.

Thank you so much for the good thoughts. It's great to hear how well other babies born that early are doing now. I volunteer for the March of Dimes and I'm on the Event Planning Committee. We had an event tonight and it was really great to be around other moms who have been there and understand everything that's going on. Just connecting with other moms is really helping me get through this.

Here are some pictures. I got to hold them right before they started having all their problems. It's the only time I've been able to hold them. Now I can't even touch Vincent because his vital signs go all crazy at the slightest disturbance. These are all over a week old because I have been having camera issues. My camera broke so I went and bought a new one which stopped working. And I lost the receipt, but Bobby found it today so I FINALLY have one that works!

    Me and Gabriel:

And this is Gabriel. The nurse took it. She caught him with his eyes open.

Take lots and lots of pictures.  You will be amazed how quickly they change.  I am so glad that they are holding their own.  I am sorry you aren't able to hold them though.  That must be so hard.

Wow! It really sounds like despite that recent complications that they are holding their own....that is great that they are back up to birth weight. I am glad that you are able to be around others that truly know what you are going through....although I have never experienced what you are going through, I know in other difficult times that even that "knowing" atmosphere was exactly the hope and comfort I needed.

Glad to hear that they are doing well. My boys were 28 weekers but about the same size as your boys (2lbs 10oz and 1lb 15oz). They spent 10 weeks in NICU, including their first Christmas. Cohen had a grade 3 brain bleed while in NICU and was unimaginably close to having CP.

They are going to be 4 years old in 2 weeks and I cannot believe it!! It took them a full 3 years to get up to "average" size but now there is absolutely no telling they were so tiny. They are 100% healthy and active!! They are in speech therapy which is the only sign of any delay at this point.

Hold them lots, take tons of pictures and my one regret, is not doing more pictures of them next to something...to put their size in perspective. Believe it or not, it's hard to look back at the pictures and fully comprehend just how tiny they were!!

    Re: Mrs Garcia

Congratulations on the birth of Vincent and Gabriel. I hope they stay well so they can continue to grow and wean from the vents. It's hard being a NICU mom. I remember when my girls were in, I loved hearing others' stories. In fact seeing Tina's boys (the previous poster) helped me a lot while my girls were in the hospital.

Our twins were born at 26 weeks, so a little older than your guys. They were 1.5 and 2 pounds at birth (3/13/06). They were both vented for about 5 weeks, weaned with steroids, then on CPAP and O2. Sarah came home at 40 weeks and Gracie came home on O2 and pulse ox at 43.5 weeks. The O2 lasted for about another 5 months. Today, they're both, ummm, ACTIVE!! Running everywhere, getting in to everything. They keep me busy!! I have two older kids and these two by far are the most daring and inquisitive kids out of all of them. I pumped for 7 months after they were born and Sarah got fortified bm until November. Grace had to move to formula before she got home because she was losing weight on fortified bm (even at 28 calories). My other two were ebf'd, so I definitely believe in the benefits of breastfeeding. Pumping was hard but worth it.

Overall, the girls are thriving. The greatest thing I am told now when people find out their birthweights is, "Wow, I would have never guessed!" I love hearing that. They aren't without their challenges, but the things we face are all things we can deal with and small in the big picture. Grace has some gross motor delays (but that doesn't stop her from running and climbing). Both have a few OT delays (small stuff) and they both are profoundly farsighted (they've work glasses for nine months now). Grace is also speech delayed. But in my heart I know that it'll all work itself out. I am not worried at all.

Please feel free to pm me if you want to email some more. It is so traumatic not having your kids at home where they belong. You'll get through it one day at a time. Keep a journal if you're not already. I'd also recommend a wonderful book called, "Parenting your premature baby and child : the emotional journey" by Deborah L. Davis and Mara Tessler Stein. It is fantastic for moms of micropreemies because it doesn't focus on medical problems like many other preemie resources. This book focuses not only on the babies, but also on how YOU and DAD will feel, how having preemies affects your other kids, grandparents, families. There's also good information for you to give your friends and family that will help them support you.

Sorry so long!! Take care, jenny (mom to Sarah and Grace TTTS survivors)

They are so sweet! Callie was also a preemie. She was a 28 weeker and she'll be 3 years old on Tuesday. She spent 7 weeks in the NICU. She didn't have any complications and was just discharged from the hospital's NICU follow up program last week. You'd think it would be easier since I've been through the NICU rollercoaster before, but it's not.
